Show Page 2 February En9 201 CALENDAR OF EVENTS REAL VISITS PANGUITCH! RH:SrSIDE•LINES -0 By Mack Oetting Thursday, February 11, 2010 It was a big week in Panguitch sports, starting with the Lady Cats who finished their regular season with wins over Milford and Wayne. Milford was the last home game of the season, with the Cats defeating Milford 53 to 32. Seniors Chelsie Barney, Karie Owens and Shelby Taylor were recognized and thanked for the many years of dedication to Panguitch girl's basketball. They are truly great examples to our community of the great youth we have. On Friday the Ladycats wrapped up the regular season by traveling to Wayne. The Ladies came away victorious by a score of 48 to 31. The Cats were led by Kalani Norris with 22, followed by Chelsie Barney's 10 and Shelby Taylor with 8. The Ladycats will now prepare for the region tournament which will be held in Panguitch on February 10-12. Come on out and support these local teams and see some entertaining games. Games will start at 3:30 each day. The girls played Escalante last night and will be playing their second game today, Thursday, check schedule for time. If all goes as planned we should by playing Piute again in the Championship game on Friday night. PUT THURSDAY AND FRIDAY ON YOUR CALENDER AND COME ON OUT AND SUPPORT THE LADYCATS. Has this been a great year for boy's basketball or what! Another exciting game on Friday, this time it was against Valley. Valley and Panguitch were tied for the lead in Region 20. The game see sawed back and forth till the last two minutes when the Bobcats pulled away, winning 73 to 61. The Cats were led by Eric Frandsen and Brooke Leach with 20 points each. Riley Miller was not far behind with 19. Brandon Birch got a basket with a steal and a lay up. The boy's games here have really been exciting, all have been well played and very close. The Cats have a game at Piute on February 6th and Milford will be here on February 16. The wrestling team went to Milford and came away with a second place finish in the Southern Division. Monticello won easily, they had 12 wrestlers in the 14 match finals. However, the Bobcats have 10 going to State; led by Jory Owens who pinned his two opponents at the 103# weight and took first place as well as being selected the Outstanding Wrestler at the meet. The following will be going to State: Cade Coles at 112# took 2nd, Sam Vasquez at 119 # took 4th; Jacob Perkins at 130# took 3rd; Nick Burns at 145# took 2nd; Caleb Holman at 152# took 3rd, Russell Rickets at 160# took 3rd; Aaron George at 171# took 3rd; Tyler Brinkerhoff at 215# took 4th; and Big John Mudge took 2nd in the heavy weight 285# division. Matt Houston and Cory Owens have a very young team and most of the wrestlers that didn't make it to State and gave 110% will get that opportunity next year. They are really close to making it, maybe just a few more reps in the weight room or more time spent on conditioning or an additional year of growth. Everyone put out to make this a team effort. This is a tough sport and all the boys did real well. State will be at UVU, this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 12 and 13th. Escalante had 4 wrestler at the tournament and two of them are going to State, with a 2nd and 3rd; see Jana's column for their names. • Girls Basketball Region Tourney @ Panguitch • State Wrestling @ UVU Friday, February 12, 2010 • Girls Basketball Region Tourney @ Panguitch • State Wrestling @ UVU Saturday, February 13, 2010 • BVHS Boys BBall @ Valley Monday, February 15, 2010 • Presidents Day - No School Tuesday, February 16, 2010 • PHS Boys Basketball @ home vs. Milford Wednesday, February 17, 2010 • Girls State Basketball @ SVC If you have an event you would like listed on the calendar of events, please email it to snapshot@live.com the Friday prior to the issue you want it to appear in. The Students of Bryce Valley Elementary had a "Human Chess Tournament" this past week. This is were the students play the chess pieces and the winners are the players. They had a timed game between this years winner, Sammy Dutton and last years winner, John Cloud. Then Sammy played Principal LeFevre and Levi Holm, who was the second place winner, and they also played a time game. It was designed this way so no one lost and they all enjoyed the game. For the regular Chess Tournament the winners were Sammy Dutton 1st place, Levi Holm 2nd place, Roman Platt 3rd place, Hunter Mathews came in 4th place, Ethan Nell was 5th place, and Zennon Hutchings was the 6th place winner. I think it's the same folks who starred last time. It has quite a similar sound. I don't know for sure why they bother. The outcome seems scripted, I guess. Half the officials say "NO" to all things. The other half, naturally, "YES". The only thing both sides agree on is two-handed spending of cash. They want to get rid of the last living nickel that we ever had in our stash. So tune up your TVs for three years of noise while the candidates sputter and squall. The best thing for me is I still have a big sack of last campaign's strong Tylenol.
