Basically this would make it illegal to own a firearm any rifle with a clip or ANY pistol unless: • It is registered • You are fingerprinted • You supply a current Driver’s License • You supply your Social Security # • You will submit to a physical & mental evaluation at any time of their choosing • Each update - change or ownership through private or public sale must be reported and costs $25 - Failure to do so you automatically lose the right to own a firearm and are subject up to a year in jail. • There is a child provision clause on page 16 section 305 stating a child-access provision. Gun must be locked and inaccessible to any child under 18. They would have the right to come and inspect that you are storing your gun safely away from accessibility to children and fine is punishable for up to 5 yrs. In prison. The history of this bill: HR 45 was introduced due to the death of a young man by the name of Blair Holt, who was killed in May of 2007 when a careless shooter opened fire on a bus. While Blair is a victim of one persons carelessness, and was a talented and wonderful person. This law, if passed will will do very little to prevent careless shooters from acting out. It may help solving crimes that will occur. It will also allow the government another source of revenue through registration and renewal fees. Currently this bill has been referred to the Judiciary Committee. Contact Jim Matheson. It is time that he becomes familiar with those whom he represents. By Pat Dix GIRL’S 1-A STATE RESULTS Of the five Region 15 teams in the tournament three advanced to the quarter finals. Panguitch’s Kalani Norris’ 22 points were 1 more than the St. Joseph’s team total of 21, as the Lady Bobcats coasted past Region 17’s number one team 38 to 21. Chelsea Barney was the only other Bobcat in double figures with 10. The Bobcat defense came to the forefront in the first half holding the Jayhawks to just 5 points and 0 in quarter number one. Bryce Valley led Duchesne by just one point at half time but then outscored the Eagles 26 to 13 in the final 16 minutes to pull out a 40 to 32 victory. Shyanne Cornforth had a game high 14, and Ashley Nelson 8 more to help outscore Duchesne 14 to 7 buckets from the floor. DAY 2 Super Soph, Kalani Norris racked up 26 of the Bobcats total 32 points, leading Panguitch into the semi finals with a 32 to 25 win over Altamont. Panguitch went into a control game mode in quarter number four, forcing the Longhorns to foul, and as a result the Cats scored just 6 from the foul stripe without a shot on basket from the field Bryce Valley’s outstanding senior center, Deysha Twitchell once again had the hot hand Thursday, leading the Lady Mustangs to a 48 to 30 win over Wendover with her 15 point output. Shyanne Cornforth and Jade Harris each chipped in 8 points as the Mustangs led all the way. For 3rd and 4th place, Bryce Valley and Piute met head on with the T birds coming out on top 55 to 40. Piute jumped out in front early and were never headed after that. Deysha Twitchell wound up her brilliant Bryce Valley career with 18 points, while Piute’s Kandice Gleave led all with 26. In the consolation bracket, Wayne captured 6th place with 37 to 29 win over Green River. Jeanessa Taylor was the points leader for the Lady Badgers with 12. So in summation, Region 15 once more demonstrated why they are considered the toughest region in the state. Panguitch placed 2nd, Piute 3rd, Bryce Valley 4th, and Wayne 6th. Not too bad for us SOUTHERN UTAH country folk!!!!! To each and every player and coach of our Region 15 teams I extend my personal congratulations. You make a long winter interesting and exciting. DAY THREE Matching up Bryce and Panguitch was the type of game where it was a shame that any one had to lose, because both teams played so hard and so brilliantly. From the initial tip off it was evident that the Bryce Valley defensive strategy for this semi final game, was to shut down Panguitch’s high scoring sophomore, Kalani Norris and force the other four Bobcats to try and beat you, and it worked.......almost! In the first half Norris had scored just two points, but her team mates had come through and led the Mustangs 17 to 10. Then came a horrendous third period in which the Cats could manage only a single field goal and trailed 22 to 19. With time running out in the final quarter, and Bryce Valley leading by three, Brianne Bateman sank her only field goal of the night, a three pointer, and we were headed for OT knotted at 30 all! Heading into the overtime, Norris had been held to just two field goals and two free throws, but with just 1.6 seconds on the clock, she made the most important jump shot of her young career, a two pointer that sent the Bobcats to the Championship game, 36 to 34. For Panguitch Chelsea Barney led with 11, Kalani Norris was held to 10, Shelby Taylor 8, Brianne Bateman that critical 3, and Bobbie Burningham 4, with 7 rebounds and 3 steals. Bryce Valley’s great center, Deysha Twitchell was virtually unstoppable, driving home 20 points for the Mustangs. In the other semi final, Piute number one in Region 15, was dominated by the top ranked Rich Rebels, 61 to 47. The Thunderbirds were outscored from the floor by only one field goal, but the Rebel’s 20 of 32 from the charity stripe was too much for the T Birds to overcome. Kandice Gleave’s 21 points, and Amanda Bagley’s 12, led the Piute scoring. Piute was the third Region 15 team to make the semi finals, as they coasted to an 81 to 59 win over Whitehorse. Amanda Bagley led the T Birds with 21, Loni Allen had 17, and Kandice Gleave 16. In the consolation bracket, Wayne’s tough defense shutout Meridian in the opening 8 minutes, allowing only 4 points in the entire half in picking up the 31 to 23 win over the Mongoose. Brooke Blackburn and Jamie Jackson each scored 6 for the Lady Badgers. The Tiger’s Cherrity Hardy chalked up 17 points as Milford slipped past Tabiona 45 to 42. Kandice Gleave’s 12 and Loni Allen’s 10 led Piute to an easy win over Tabiona. The T Birds scored in double figures in three of four quarters in racking up the 59 to 34 win. Trailing the number one ranked Rich Rebels by just 2 points at the break, the Wayne Badgers ran in to a bit of a scoring drought in the 3rd stanza and wound up on the short end of a 51 to 41 score. Jamie Jackson with 13, Krista Durfey with 12, and Jeanessa Taylor with 8 were the scoring leaders for the Lady Badgers. Milford was just down 1 point at intermission against Whitehorse, but then could only muster 4 points in each of the 3rd and 4th quarters, and lost 55 to 27. DAY FOUR A combination of a Rich Rebel’s very effective full court press, and a multitude of Panguitch turnovers, resulted in the Lady Bobcats having to settle for second place in the state to the tune of 47 to 32. There is no denying that the Rebel squad was the class of 1A and deserved the crown, as they breezed through all four games of the tournament. Panguitch’s star sophomore Kalani Norris once again led the Cats with 14 points, despite e tough defense that attempted to shut her down. The Lady Bobcats, came into the tournament unranked, a 3rd place play-in team, and to wind up in the championship contest was truly a major accomplishment in itself. Friday’s game with a terrific Bryce Valley team was without question the best game of the tourney and the finest Panguitch has played all season. In the Consolation bracket, Wayne blated Milford 41 to 25 to earn a shot against Green River for 6th place in the tourney. It was the Badger’s defense that rose to occasion, shutting down the Tigers with single digit scores in all four quarters. Jamie Jackson had a game high 12 points, Jeanessa Taylor 9, and Krista Durfey 8, for the Badgers. MOQUIS COMPLETE UNDEFEATED REGION 15 SEASON Tuesday Escalante traveled to Bryce Valley and with Tim Hughes scoring 16 points, 4 from downtown, came away with a 77 to 39 win. The Moqui’s attack was well distributed as 10 players managed to get into the scoring column. Escalante’s “bomb squad” blew in a total of eleven from way down yonder, with Jace Taylor and Dalton Lisonbee at three each, Kace Roundy one, and of course Tim Hughes with four. At Piute, Tyson Westwood canned 29 as the T Birds held on to fourth place with a 56 to 45 win over Milford. Escalante defeated Valley, as Tim Hughe’s 18 points, led Escalante past Valley 65 to 48, to wind up the season for the Moquis with an unblemished Region record. Kevin Griffin chipped in with 11, and Logan Mc Lemore 10, for the number 1 ranked Moquis. Bryce Valley closed out what can only be described as a painful season at Piute, losing to the T birds, 67-44. Dusty Ahlstrom was the Mustang’s one bright spot, with an 18 point effort. If adrenalin pumping, heart stopping action is your particular cup of tea, then Wednesday’s thriller between the Wayne Badgers and the Panguitch Bobcats is where you should have been. A see-saw battle for almost 32 minutes, it was sent into OT when Trac Norris hit a three pointer to tie at 55, with just 16 ticks on the clock. In the overtime, Wayne outscored the Bobcats 9 to 6 to take home the victory, 64 to 61. Both teams had 25 buckets from the field and 6 from the free throw line, but he Badgers 6 from three point range was really the deciding factor. The Cat’s great senior, Trac Norris led all with 23 points. Brooks Leach, who sat out the whole 2nd quarter with foul trouble, chipped in 18 points and 10 rebounds, and Eric Frandsen had 13. The Badgers had four in double figures; Tyce Peterson 15, Trevor Taylor and Carson Chappell 13 each, and Lance Peterson 12. Despite the loss, Panguitch maintains their hold on second place. Monday the opening games of the Region Tournament will be played at Escalante, Panguitch, and Wayne. Tuesday and Wednesday, the 24th and 25th the tourney will continue at S.U.U.’s Centrum in Cedar City. Wayne’s Bagers ended the regular season on a positive note, downing Milford 61-41. Lance Peterson had 26 for the Badgers and brother Tyce added 10 more. The Region 15 season ended with Escalante in the top spot, Wayne and Panguitch tied for second with equal records, but the Badgers take second on the strength of their 2 wins over Panguitch. Valley is 4th, Piute 5th, Milford 6th, and Bryce Valley 7th. REGION 15 BOY’S TOURNAMENT Panguitch hosted Milford in day one of the tournament and led by Brooks Leach’s 24 points, 5 blocks, and 8 boards, crushed the Tigers 76 to 36. The Bobcats dominated the boards with 36 rebounds and outscored Milford 25 to 14 from the field. Eric Frandsen had another double-double night with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Trac Norris chipped in with 13, and Bryce Taylor added 10, as the Cats blew the game open with a 25 point third quarter. |
