The district now allows camping along the East Fork of the Sevier River only in the developed campground at King Creek and the ten dispersed campsites. The campsites run south along the East Fork of the Sevier River from Ingram Hollow just south of Tropic Reservoir to Robinson Canyon at the southern end of the district. Each site is marked with a site number sign. Five of the dispersed campsites are single-unit sites and five provide for occupancy by larger groups. The district permits camping in the sites for up to 16 days. • •. • The East Fork of the Sevier River is within the boundaries of the Upper Sevier River Watershed Enhancement Project, a large-scale watershed restoration effort involving local, state and federal agencies and private landowners. More information about the project is available at www.uppersevier.net. ' The Powell Ranger District's identification and development of dispersed campsites along the East Fork helps provide dispersed camping opportunities while improving the ecological integrity of the watershed, as mandated by the Upper Sevier project. Designating these dispersed campsites also helps reduce the impacts of unmanaged recreation on the environment, which Forest Service Chief Dale Bosworth has called one of the great threats to America's forests and grasslands. For more information about camping and other recreation opportunities on the Powell Ranger District, call the district office at (435) 676-9300 or visit the Dixie National Forest's web site at www.fs.fed.us/r4/dixie. Details about the dispersed campsites will be added to the web site as the 2007 recreation season approaches. COMMENTS SOUGHT ON POTENTIAL ROAD IMPROVEMENTS TO S.R. 12 ESCALANTE, UTAH - The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is seeking public comments on a proposed list of improvements for State Route 12 between Escalante and Boulder. The S.R. 12 Escalante to Boulder Environmental Study team has begun developing a National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) document that will assess impacts of potential improvements to S.R. 12 between Escaiante and Boulder. This document will also pursue a Title 23 right-of-way acquisition from the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM) with the Federal Highway Administration serving as lead agency for the project. During extensive public involvement activities in Phase I, the project team received hundreds of comments from the public and from agencies regarding solutions for S.R. 12. The project team categorized the suggestions and prioritized them based on context and need. The prioritized list includes improvements that could potentially be funded within the next ten years. The improvements that will be evaluated as part of the NEPA document .are as follows: Obtain right-of-way where it is currently defined by RS-2477 (MP 69 to MP 83.5*). Replace Calf Creek Bridge (MP 75*). Stabilize roadway slope south of Calf Creek Recreation Area (MP 75.3*). Stabilize existing barrier and investigate replacing concrete Jersey barrier with aesthetic barrier north of Calf Creek Recreation Area (MP 76.2, MP 78.2*). Widen shoulders in conjunction with other projects. (The intent is not for a shoulder widening project along the entire corridor, but to identify a desired typical section.) Provide passing pullouts (Intended to allow slow moving vehicles to pull aside and let other vehicles pass) a. Evaluate eastbound pullouts at MP 68, 73.4, 77, 80.5* b. Evaluate westbound pullouts at MP 70.2, 72, 83.5, 85.5* Improve intersections at Hole-in-the-Rock road (MP 65*) and Calf Creek Recreation Area (MP 75.8*). Investigate placing guardrail at the steeply sloped ravines in the area known as the *Big Flat* east of Escalante. Reclaim parking-pullout areas (Improve or reclaim areas perceived as parking areas). Widen curve known as *the Tank* (MP 71.5*). *Mile Post locations are approximate - Some of the identified needs will be addressed utilizing non-impactive measures such as better signing and striping; pavement treatments, and traffic calming elements at speed transition zones. The project team would like comments on this proposed list of improvements. Please email your comments to sr-12@hwlochner.com or contact Randi Shover at (801) 262-8700 to provide verbal comments. A more formal comment period will take place during a public hearing in late-spring of 2007 when a draft NEPA document is available for review. The project team welcomes any questions, comments, and/or suggestions that the public may have on the S.R. 12 Project. Please visit the project web site for additional information at www.udot.utah.gov/sr-12. or contact Randi Shover with H.W. Lochner, Inc., at (801) 262-8700 or rshover@hwlochner.com. |
