OLYMPIC MEDALIST RULON GARDNER SIGNS, PRINTING 6 GRAPHIC DESIGN .435-676-2621 SURVIVES PLANE CRASH IN LAKE POWELL Olympic medalist Rulon Gardner, along with pilot Randy Brooks, owner and CEO of Barnes Ammunition of American Fork, and Brooks' brother Leslie, all survived the crash of Brooks' small plane (Cirrus SR22) into the freezing waters of Lake Powell yesterday afternoon, where the three swam in 44 degree waters for over an hour to the nearest shore (Good Hope Bay) and then spent the night with no fire or shelter. Pilot Randy Brooks was flying low to the water when the aircraft struck the water. The three were able to escape the plane, before it sank completely. The next morning they were able to Hag,3o\Mn' ^passing fisherman and were taken to Bullfrog Marina where National Park Service Ranger Medics examined them. The three opted to have Brooks' son-in-law fly up from Las Vegas and take them to American Fork for medical attention instead of an AIRVAC helicopter. Miraculously the three sustained no life-threatening injuries, mainly suffering from hypothermia injuries to their feet, with Leslie Brooks' case being the most severe, as his toes had turned black and blue from the cold water. The exact location of the crash is unknown at this time but it is believed Page 6 THE GARFIELD COUNTY INSIDER to have crashed near the Garfield County/San Juan County border running through Lake Powell in Good Hope Bay, Lake Powell, Utah. An investigation into the exact cause of the crash is continuing. Steven Luckesen, District Ranger for National Park Service at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, says the three are "very, very lucky." Luckesen said, "It takes only about 30 minutes for someone swimming in 44 degree water to start suffering severe effects of hypothermia, so the fact that they swam in it for a hour, not to mention surviving the plane crash and the night without fire or shelter, is pretty amazing. If these guys were ,a cat with, nine lives, they just used up three of them." Rulon Gardner is perhaps best known for being a two-time Olympic champion and 3 time national champion in GrecoRoman wrestling, with a history-making victory at the 2000 Olympics by beating previously undefeated Alexandre Karelin in what some dubbed the "Miracle on the Mat." Gardner has also made a few headlines in recent years, as in 2002 he was stranded overnight in the Wyoming wilderness while snowmobiling and lost one of his toes to frostbite, and in 2004 was involved in a motorcycle accident when a car struck him, causing him to flip over the car and onto the pavement. 1992 DODGE DAKOTA 4 wheel drive, S1800,435-679-8132 1988 CHEVY 3500 2 WD Runs Greatm 108,000 miles, $3000 or consider trade for a jeep, Panguitch 676-8246 or 690-1888 1997 FORD EXPLORER 5 Speed manual transmission, 118 K miles, New tires & shocks, CD player, 2" Tow hitch, Yakima bike rack included, Excellent codition, $2750 OBO, Call Aaron 691-1001 2006 MAZDA 3 Trip Tronic transmission, excellent condition, 24,000 miles, S16,500 OBO, Call 491 0424 LIVESTOCK CHAROLAIS BULLS FOR SALE Trich, PAP, and Fertility tested Call Riley Taylor 425-3807 or Dunk Taylor 425-3994 SERVICES DENNIS BOREN PAINT CONTRACTOR Interior & Exterior, Licensed & Insured Free Estimates, 435-679-8842 RENT / LEASE Silverado Boys Ranch, a therapeutic boarding school for boys ages 13-17, located in Panguitch, Utah is looking for energetic, outgoing, creative individuals to fill the following positions: Coaches: This position requires those who are willing to mentor, encourage and help change the lives of young men.
