I have been an active observer of several elections and never before have I been aware of such a great disparity between the promises made by a candidate for president and his actual performances in office. The disparity is so great as to lead to the conclusion that Carter either did not mean what he said as a candidate, or is very inept as President. For example. Carter an inflation promised rate of 4 or less during his first term in office. Four years later inflation reached the record level of 18.2 and is now on an anat about 12 nualized basis. Carter promised never to increase taxes for the working people, saying, "You can depend on that if I'm elected. No new director was elected - no one has time to devote to coordinating arts activities in Fillmore. Last year barely half of the 121 members bought season tickets. The work which has gone 1 1 1 into this project is inestimable. But in order to get grant monies to continue this and the Childrens Workshop, we need to go through an arts council. Why cant we find a director? "Too busy, Ive done my part, "I'll support it, but let someone else lead it, "Let the young energetic people do it," "Let the older, more experienced "Its easpeople do it, ier to stay home and watch TV. "The church takes all my time. Some of the finest people I have ever known, (and I've lived in ten different states) live in Fillmore. But there seems to be a disease here called busyness. Perhaps we should all evaluate just what this and "let "busyness someone else do it is all about. Coordinating programs is neither difficult nor time consuming. Anything worthwhile does take some effort, but with such a large membership the duties can be spread among many. The LDS Church has rearranged schedules and let go of programs in order to give people more time for family and civic involvement. What is being done with this precious time? Fillmore has been the shining example for the Utah Arts Council of cultural achievements in a small town. The Fillmore Civic Arts Council is the result of the dedication and hard work of such citizens as Gwen Edith Callister, Hunter, Stella Day, Ilene Cooper, and Golden P. Wright. Do we dare let it die?
