This week, however, has been a week of happiness. Monday was a holiday and Belva did not have to go to the drug store. Therefore, we drove to Salt Lake and enjoyed every minute of the day. As most of the places of business were open, we toured all of the nurseries and purchased new plant material, since both of us enjoy gardening and like to add something new each year to renew our interest in gardening. Now that plants are potted so expertly, gardners can add new plants all during the growing season, if the gardener really knows how to care for each plant he purchases. The nursery people are having real sales this time of year since they don't want to carry the plants over until next season as the cost for taking proper care of the nursery stock is more than the sale price of the plant next spring. By planting now the gardener can get the plants well rooted before they go dormant. On Wednesday, Mayor Mark Paxton received word that Fillmore had won an award for Fillmores participation in the Utah Community Progress Contest. (Remember how many long hours spent getting the scrapbook ready by August 1st?). The award is given at the Convention of the League of Cities and Towns. Mayor and Mrs. Paxton, Chairman for Community Progress Duane Baugh and his wife, Linda, and City Councilwoman Doris Rasmussen all attended the convention and discussed plans for improving our town in the next two years. Somehow, Fillmore manages to be in the winning column even entries in this though there were contest. If we all work together for the next two years, we could be in First Place! The third interesting event to happen to me this last Saturday was the opening luncheon for the East Millard Fine Arts Guild. Rain was predicted, however, we had rain predictions all summer, but we never get more than a dozen drops. Therefore, no one paid the slightest attention to the prediction. This event was to be held in the beautiful gardens of John and llene Cooper. An excellent committee had everything arranged to the last item and a large crowd of over 100 ladies gathered at llene's gardens by 4 p.m. Everything was in readiness when down came the rain. This would have been a disaster had the party been planned in most of our gardens, but llene and Jolene had the tables moved next to the walls where the overhanging root protected us all from the rain and in record time all 100 guests were served a most delicious luncheon. By the time we had finished eating, the rain had ceased and we all took our chairs and were seated in one of the most attractive gardens in Utah. They had moved the piano to the garden and Mrs. Marlene Tillitson entertained the guests with classical music until everyone was seated for the program. Janet Cooper was the attractive narrator who kept entertainers coming and going so smoothly that there was never"a dull moment. Kim Brunson, Stephani Kim Brunson, Stephanie Wilson, Rulane Stevens and Eloise Stevens, Junior Varsity girls, and gymnast to a Jazz Got Rhythm Dennis Adamson sang accompaniment until guests were all tapping their toes. John Cooper and his two little boys stole the show with their "Indian war dances". Their authentic costumes must have cost a small fortune. Jolene Stephenson, Fine Arts V.P. elect, not only helped her mother, llene Cooper, with the gorgeous llower arrangements, she also entertained with disco dancing. Merrily Anderson, in her beautiful Hawaiian costume, danced to the accompaniment of her Ukulele. Mary Monroe sang beautiful love songs that charmed us all. llene had the crowd laughing when she introduced the program with her comic recitation. Wrapped in a shawl, using a cane, bent over double she said, "I was hardly out of bed in the morning when here came Charley Horse to pest me. I got rid of him when here came Arthur Ritis to pest me. After some time Will Power arrived and stayed the rest of the afternoon, but then, as always, went to bed with Ben Gay." The talented people on the program were all local, and the over 100 guests all came from East Millard thus adding to the occasion. & or Fishing Gear & Bait Guns & Ammo Reloading Supplies Camping Gear Open 7 day a weak 'til 10:00 p.m. week weaknlghts. 74VS3SS Fourth Ward Sponsors Fair The Fillmore 4th Ward is sponsoring a Fair on September 18.
