But just how should these words be interpreted? Well, even if we have become familiar with todays definitions, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is currently proposing changes in many of these terms. In an article in the February 1992 issued of FDA Consumers, the proposed definitions for descriptions consumers may soon find on food products are addressed. Some of the most common ones are described below.
