They strain their necks peering down the parade route to see who is throwing out the most candy or treats. If you watch close enough you can see their eyes narrow as they zoom in on the ones who have the greatest goodies to offer, and when candy arcs across the early morning sky you can watch them dash forward with mad abandon to gather up as many treats as they can. That, of course is one thing a small town parade has over the big city version, but it isn’t the only thing. While some parades offer floats that people have spent hours upon hours carefully decorating with intricate design, in a small town parade you are also just as likely to see a float composed of a piece of poster paper duct taped to a 4-wheeler. And if it happens to be your great Uncle Bob riding the 4-wheeler, he’s just as likely to get a cheer as anyone else in the parade. In small town parades you’ll have your local businesses riding proudly down Main Street, waving to the crowds and tossing goodies and three floats behind the Republicans will be the Democrats, with everyone waving and everyone cheering, not because of their political views as much as because the candidates are neighbors from right down the road. In some towns if you plan your parade for the right time of day and don’t stretch it out too long, you might be able to pull the whole thing off without having to divert traffic, because there usually isn’t any. Twenty minutes before the parade starts you can find the parade line packed with everyone frantically putting last minute touches on their floats (or another roll of duct tape on their poster board sign). You can see the queens, the princesses and the little miss princesses practicing their parade waves. You can find others making sure they have plenty of candy on board or trying to keep their balloons from deflating before they can make it the three or four blocks of the parade route. You can see everyone having fun, everyone smiling, everyone enjoying the moment of a small town parade. The grand marshals for small town parades are usually someone everyone knows and already loves: A town honored citizen, or a local military veteran. For the Emery County Fair Parade on Aug. 2 the grand marshals were the men and women of the emergency response services, from the emergency medical technicians, to the fire department to law enforcement, they waved to the crowd and were cheered as the local heroes they are as children scampered about gathering up the candy that was thrown their way. With only two parades left in Emery County for the year (the Ferron Peach Days Parade and the Green River Melon Days Parade), it is a sign that summer will soon fade into fall, and lining the street to wave at friends as they ride past on their beautiful floats, or on Uncle Bob’s 4-wheeler, will have to wait until another parade season begins…again.
