Show April 2002 Energy Dateline charts coal mining stages Coal has not only exerted a monumental influence on local economic development, the natural energy resource and mining industry have impacted areas across the entire United States. The National Mining Association has developed a calendar highlighting the progress of the U.S. coal industry. 1000 A.D. - Hopi Indians, in what is now Arizona, use coal to bake pottery made from clay. - Louis Jolliet and Father Jacques 1673-7Marquette discover charbon de terra (coal) at a point on the Illinois River. 1701 - Coal is found by Huguenot settlers at Manakin on the James River in Virginia. 1 736 Maps reveal coal mines along the upper 4 Potomac River. 1748 - The fust recorded commercial U.S. coal production from mines in the Manakin area. 1 762 - Anthracite discovered in Pennsylvania. - Coal is used to manufacture shot, 1776-8- 2 shell and other war material during the Revolu- tionary War. 1816 - Baltimore, Md., becomes the first city to light streets with gas made from coal. 1818 - John Flannigan, a rock quarryman. is sent to Pennsylvania to shoot coal - the first record of blasting in an American mine. 1830 - First commercially practical American-buil- t locomotive, Tom Thumb, is manufactured. Locomotives that bunted wood were quickly modified to use coal almost entirely. 1839 - The steam shovel is invented and eventually becomes instrumental in mechanizing surface coal mining. 1848 - The first coal miners union is formed in Schuylkill County, Pa. 1858 - The first fan in a U.S. coal mine is installed at a facility in Pennsylvania. 1861 - The American Miners Association is organized in Illinois and becomes the first miners union to extend beyond one state. 1866 - Surface or strip mining begins in Illinois. I Iorse-dran plows and scrapers are used to remove overburden so the coal can be dug and hauled away in wheelbarrows and carts. 1870 - Briquetting of coal in introduced in U.S. 1873 - The first coal mining machine invented in the U.S., a steam undercutter, is used at a mine in Indiana. The machine is capable of mining 100 tons in a period. 1875 - Coke replaces charcoal as the chief fuel for iron blast furnaces. 1877-steam shovel is used to excavate some 10 feet of overburden from a coalbed in Kansas. 1880 - John L. Iewis. future president of the United Mine Workers of America, is born. 1882 - Cutting and drilling machines operated on compressed air are used at mines in Rock elecSprings, Wyo. The first practical tric generating station, developed by Thomas Edison, goes into operation in New York City, supplying electricity for household lights. 1888 - The first electric locomotive is used in a bituminous mine. 1890 - The United Mine Workers of America is w 24-ho- A three-foot-thic- k coal-fire- d formed. 1896 - Steel timbering is used for the first time at a shaft mine.
