Show MARTIAL LAW ABOLISHED IN IDAHO hunt after 11 alon decide tl ere id no further danger 0 violence governor hunt thursday issued proclamation abolishing martial law in shoshone county idaho the proc la mation became effective immediately after the governor affixed his signature thereto martial law was declared by nor may 4 1899 fol lowing the destruction 0 the bunker concentrator during the ary riot on april 29 after reciting the fac s leading up to the declaration of bartall law and approving the action of governor in the matter the i rocia says in part immediately upon the adjournment of the legislature I 1 proceeded to visit the districts in which this trouble had occurred stopping at the tows of wardner wallace mullen gem and burke and passing through the pal mines and mills meeting and con suiting with miners in sympathy with union labor as well as those opposed to labor unions of the couer d alene and consulting as well with the owners and operators of the mines with busi nes men in all the towns mentioned and with railroad interests 11 have found a wonderfully pros country in the full growth of its earlier developments employing thousands of men and producing and of tons of ore daily it was my object to observe the condition of this country and to know whether any great part of the citizens of shoshone bho shone county approved of the act of violence corn bitted in april 1898 and also whether there was till danger of further dis tur bance and riot my investigation haa convinced me that the citizens of shoshone bho shone county are today law abiding an I 1 law loving united in their desire for peace and frowning on any element that would bring again trouble aud anxiety and suffering into peaceful and prosperous homes martial law is the spirit of force necessary in its employment to protect life and property and applicable at any time for that purpose its operation in time of peace after danger and peril are over is repugnant to conr form of government and a menace to our ansti our constitution safely place the administration of law in the hands of the civil authorities there to remain during their ability to maintain it new officers have been elected and are in active performance of their duties bince january 1901 unopposed by organized violence of any description and outspoken in their ability to maintain order |
