Bam! Whack! State of TV e Continued from pg. 5 today is hardly cartoonish e live in a society where people tend to blame everyone but themselves for their problems — when | obviously the real blame for our misfortunes lies with television. This all came into focus while I was watching “Leave It to Beaver”. The show is about Theodore “Beaver” Cleaver and his brother Wally. In a typical episode The Beaver (and sometimes his brother) get into trouble and then have to face the music — which is usually classical. When the boys got into serious trouble they would be grounded — but for normal misbehavior they would face their dad “Ward Cleaver” and his seemingly endless supply of “Cleaver Fables” which required the boys to actually discover the moral of the story as part of their punishment. The father, Ward Cleaver, ‘John Carter So. Utah Ponderings is a successful professional who often goes to the office but whom we have never actually seen do any work. June Cleaver, (mom) is a happy, well adjusted and efficient homemaker. Together they face many challenges in bringing up the Beaver. Challenges that often include: school, work ethics, family life, career, and of course The Beaver's disdain for girls. A typical script from Leave It to aah SS go something lik @ Beaver: Hey oy Wale let's grab a “hunka’ cake, then go outside and “mess around”. @ Wally: I can't right now. My friend Eddie Haskell is coming over to get me into trouble. Mi Beaver: Why is that creep coming over? He always messes with my junk! @ Wally: Flip, Beaver, Eddie is no worse than your crummy friend, “Lumpy” Wi June overhears Wally’s use of the word “Flip” and responds: Wally Cleaver, you know! don't like you using the word “Flip”. Just wait until your father gets home. i Beaver: Golly, Wally, your goofy friend Eddie gets you in trouble with Dad even when the creep isn't around. @ Wally: Yeah, Beay, It’s really crummy, isn't it? As you can see, the show featured some pretty intense and graphic dialogue. In fact, Leave It to Beaver was on the cutting edge of early television. The show was so “Edgy” that the original. . episode ined for the pre= e See CARTER = pe: 30 HealthInsuranceInformation Program (SHIIP). When the federal government first introduced its computer-driven prescription drug program to Medicare beneficiaries in 2005, Hill was already one of several volunteers in the lab teaching seniors how to use and enjoy the computer. Early on, the little band of vglunteers recognized the Medicare D program sent chills up and down the spine of many beneficiaries, most of whom did not know where to turn to get help, had no immediate access to the Internet or lacked confidence in their ability to navigate the Medicare Web site at www. medicare.gov. During — the ~ six-week open enrollment period for Medicare D, these six volunteer SHIIP counselors will help beneficiaries switch drug plans as may be necessary for coverage in 2009, or enroll for the first time in the voluntary federal program. “This is also a good time to review your current pre- scription drug plan to decide if it will meet your needs in the coming year” said Hill. “There are new plans and some plans may no longer be available. There are changes in coverage every year, so it is important to compare the costs and benefits. You may find plans which cost less and offer better. coverage. There is no need to re-enroll if people are happy with their coverage, but beneficiaries ZINE introduced, it was estimated. some 18.6 million Americans would be eligible for the low income subsidy that covers the cost of the monthly premium for the prescription drug program. Although many millions did qualify, estimates are that approximately 1,000 in Washington County are eligible for the LIS, but have never signed up. “In other words, there are people right here in our own community who could be getting this extra help, but either don't know they qualify or don't know how to sign up for it’ said the Bloomington resident. “We invite anyone who thinks they might be eligible to let us help walk them. through the process. They might not qualify, but then again, they might... and as a result, about 1,000 Washington County residents will be better off” Hill and his fellow SHIIP counselors are available for consultation every Tuesday through Friday, from 9 - 11:30 a.m. at the St. George Senior Center, 245 N. 200 West.
