GEORGE — For the week of September 19, 2008 NEIGHBORHOODS The Spectrum — www.thespectrum.com The St. George Marathon's big day is just around the corner By COURTNEY WALLACE For St. George Neighborhoods If you have managed to make it this far into your marathon training injury- free, congratulations! If you have managed to make it this far into your training “burn-out” free...let me know your secret! However, with only 3 weekends until the big race day, I have decided to leave my burn-out woes behind and dabble in the realms of the insider scoop on how to train safely for the St. George Marathon. We all know the standard safe training tips — stretch, drink lots of water, don’t run in old shoes, and don't skip your long runs. But, what about some safe training tips specific for the St. George Marathon? Well, here are your insider tips. @ #1. Don't Train on the marathon a course (Yikes, soca where did this come from? Well, said Kent Perkins of the Leisure Services Division and St. George Marathon director, “The problem is that according to the Sheriff's Department, runners are a hazard out on the course. They have no protection running on the narrow shoulder (often in the dark) and run a great risk of being hit by oncoming traffic while training on the highway. We try to discourage that because it would be a sad thing to have a runner injured in their training for the big event. We encourage all runners to be safe.It would be a great thing if runners would chose to train on safer places, like our trail system? **As a note, runners can safely run alongside the course on a designated, paved trail that begins at the top of Snow Canyon.
