Show Operation Co-Operation Necessary 1 To Solve Basin Problems I II I By Dy J. J P. P May 1 I Every bonafide citizen of the Uintah Uin Uin- tah basin who reads this appeal I should J ponder onder well the brief outline of facts the tho necessity for united effort ef ef- I fort ort and the urgent call these facts facts' I and this necessity brings to io him Although one generation of pioneers has almost passed many of whom worked w hard for the larger and brighter day it is none the less Important important Im im- aye more Important that wie e who grasp the situation get Into the harness and all pull together If you ask the average citizen what is the most urgent necessity for f r his county or for the basin he will VIII likely answer A railroad A Afew Afew Afew few will wiIl say No we dont don't want the mil railroad road we want more farmers and then the road will c come me There Is truth In both positions or viewpoints A railroad would bring the people and a large Increase in population would bring the railroad On is equivalent to the other The fact most imp importantly magnified for us every day Is this We Ve have about quite heavily In debt unable to get their noses out of the dirt but Increasing quite rapidly and yet unable to handle the acreage taken taken taken tak tak- en In hand unable to properly furnish furnish furnish furn furn- ish their heir homes or even to build goo good homes the homes the woman has a harder lot than the man The home Is the fundamental unit in this c case se If the home is not mortgaged if a fair living Is provided and If that home Is equipped with those main necessities that modern life Ufe demands demands de de- de- de mands then a large measure of happiness hap- hap Is realized But If that home homeI li is too small poorly finished equipped With the most meager necessities and t to cap It all mortgaged for half its ds value and then taxes Interest high h costs of living etc make mak life uncertain the future rather gloomy is It not time for manifesting the llie theone theone one big feature of human progress vz the utmost cooperation These phases of our Uintah basin life Ufe equal one big fact that is we need a rail rail- road Two TW distinct classes lasses of people are found everywhere viz one class that says Oh well we cant can't do It alone W we are too poor and bigger forces control such affairs anyway A Ail we can do Is ito to wait be patient and If we decide to give up we can try something else Another class t takes a decidedly different view namely Perhaps we cannot do It but life progress every impulse of the mind and soul says try Lets do our best Lets get together In Inthe Inthe Inthe the midst of council there is wis wis- dom A few men like Tom Paine Ben Franklin and George Washington Washing Washing- ton gave us a nation Perhaps by uniting our forces we may find men who have the tho daring the originality the foresight the energy io to at least help Let us IS try We cannot lose even though we ve dont don't win a complete complete complete com com- victory we are assured of a measure of af success If we cannot get the railroad at et once we may at least increase increase- our population by adding new ew Tanners Our priced low-priced land good water excellent climate high yields of seed honey turkeys and other ther cash attract the farm tarm farmer er in parts of our own s state tate and In Inether inether ether other states where land values s are tW two to three times Umes our values with willi net earnings not as much per acre Lets try We e have four communities that might do wonderful work York if they should get to together ther right Vernal Roosevelt My Myton ton and Duchesne with help from such towns as Lapoint Lapoint La- La point Ft Duchesne Randlett Cedar- Cedar I Neola Bluebell Mt Emmons Altonah Upalco Arcadia Boneta Home Talmage Tabiona etc b by getting together would accomplish I wonders The necessary spirit of boost is almost absent Hard times long waiting waitIng waiting wait- wait Ing have taken out of the average man much of his o optimism He Is either gloomy even after reaping a good alfalfa seed harvest or he Is passive That passive spirit Is just about as bad as the gloomy atmos atmos- phere Lets try to get rid of both of em We can do it But no one community Is able to todo todo todo do doit it alone We must stand er And we should Every ten new farmers that come into the Roosevelt Roosevelt Roosevelt Roose Roose- velt district will mean twenty to fifty that will take lands In other basin basin basin ba ba- ba- ba sin localities The helping of one town helps all aH We are are until tho the railroad comes essentially bound up t-og t together ther more or orless less In one big package locked in forming a unit made up of thirty small units This unit big can a do lot but one one- one one-by by itself It Itself Itself it- it self can can do barely enough to get visible results We Ve have our local differences and we should IndivIduality Individuality Individuality is a prime requisite Lets Let's retain retain retain re re- tain these local features the community community community jealousies that are really only only on on- ly iy natural pride mixed with some apprehension and a lot of pessimism The great war illustrated the union union union un un- un- un ion of mighty forces for realization of a common comnien victory yet these forces In and of themselves are essentially antagonistic England and France are even now about to break In the Uintah basin we have cause for a grand rally a united effort all together to together together to- to gether for lor or those two or three r e b big g propositions wherein our interests are identical We Ve know that when whon I greater progress comes we shall have greater community rivalries Lets Let's welcome these future struggles as necessities as signs of life tUe progress No rivalry means means' death no progress means mearis means Inactivity The passive and the active are always mixed but It ItIs Itis Itis is up to us to have progress dominate dominate dominate domi domi- nate to have the active control the tho passive Last year we had a sort of visit by Salt Lake City's commercial inter inter- ests At the tIDe meeting in Roosevelt a former basin man R. R S. S Collett said What would you do if you had hada a You could not furnish f freight ight enough to pay operating ex ex- This same sentiment is often often orten of or- ten expressed Is that not the limit for pure pessimism for ideal ity Facts contradict this argument of our not being ready for tor a rail rall road Down In Millard county the theU U U. U 1 P. P system has built a thirty three threemile threemile mile for serving about three thousand people and this spring another new line Une will be built from Lund to Cedar City thirty five miles mile for perhaps people Down there they have developed developed de de- de- de their land and water resources resources resources re re- sources the basis of oC our life Ufo and the tic population may not be more than man doubled by these rOl roads roads- roads not 3 not that tat much Out here we have haVI about out 20 0 people and ample land lan and tind water for five times that man many and ancl andall andall all we want Is a mile road How flow do these facts compare In Idaho the 0 O S. S L. L has constructed lines linos of miles for Cor serving not hot as us many people as we now have an and with v much less land and wat water r to be ultimately ulti milti- used Lets Let's wake up Within tho the year our sheep have brought about one million dollars our seed over oer half that much turkeys turkeys' dairying dairyIng dairying dairy- dairy ing a little UttIe more honey I These are exporting crops cros or p no p o ducts of about Our seed business will within three years e ears rs tr If f we keep that four cent tarl tariff produce produce pro pro- duce duco our turkeys and chickens a a. half million our co cots cos cosand s sand and pigs one million and the sheer sheep will Increase In the small band band herd of oC better grade Are we v not hot growing growing growIng grow grow- ing Is It not time for Cor us to ra m uns unsure ras- ras asure ure up stand up and say Y we are on the map and by gosh we v arc sows gain to lo be heard I say tell fellow OW itis It Ita itis is a time now Continued on Last s Page C Coy Operation n Necessary Necessary To Solve Basin Problems Continued from Page Pago One Oae Bud Dud Gibson our Roosevelt hotel hotelman hotelman man applied tho the other day by for position position tion as chief car man tuan for fol the new railroad Bud Dud wants to handle tho feeding business on the tho dining cars I know many will regard my assumptions as dreamy stuff But B t dreams are sometimes more real than much you regard as realities Foresight Is as necessary as hind hind- sight Ambition is as necessary as placid contentment On Feb 12 at Myton Irton the farmers passed a resolution authorizing two men men to draw up and send to the leg leg- legislature legislature legislature a a. petition asking for help on the railroad business This Tills was sent to Mr 1 Hollenbeck in duplicate asking asking asking ask ask- ing him to give Senator Smart a copy Have heard nothing from Hollenbeck Hollenbe te but have formal notice from Senator Smart th that tt the petition had been presented by him to the senate and abd referred t to the committee on public affairs No doubt Mr 1 Hollenbeck Hollenbeck Hol Hol- will do the s same me and we know that the petition will slumber peacefully r there in the committees committee's dead files It is certain the Utah legislature I will wUl take no bold action such us as Colorados Colorado's legislature ture took and which means boring the tunnel Under Under Under Un Un- der such conditions it Is up to us to take action If we cant can't get the railroad now we may get more mort m more Te farmers Proper growth would consume all our hay and grain for forI I several years until the large tracts unplowed would be bo 1 pt 1 OJ Ol course COUlS we are aro short on wheat andI and I oats no stow now and we have been short at least every other year for nine yea years s that I f know of We dont don't farm we f franch ranch as a rule I ask every ward every community ty to call a public meeting one week for the purpose of a a. delegation to RO Roosevelt sevelt March i t for a meeting at 1 p p. p m. m If you ha halt hatt t both a commercial club and a fart farb tarD bureau have these forces unite i. i you have only one one then use that or organization if possible If you hays haft ne neither ther of these then let the bishop bisho or his assistants take the lead Bu Buin in any event we should have the Cv ca co cooperation operation of every minister ever eveh president of ot the stake every bishop and every other organization W What at I can we do when we get together Here is the answer r 1 or answers I Let us form a Uintah Basin Industrial Industrial Industrial Indus Indus- trial Corporation for tor the purpose or lof of building railroads canals reservoirs reservoirs and any other operations which maybe mb may maybe be decided on Lets Let's incorporate lu lit for one million dollars subscribe whatever stock we can afford o One e c thousand farmers subscribe for m Instance w In stance each payable as may may be te best within one year That would give a working start of With that much and a possibility tj of doubling the amount within a year or two we could take over over the So South tb Myton lyton bench deal the Ouray Valley project the Dead Mans Man's Bench proposition With such impetus with such union of or forces we can start stan these projects and get capital fot tot completing them This action means a railroad independently of ot what any corporation or company may do door door door or not do Every citizen even though he Is In debt can afford to subscribe The stock will soon be above par so that the subscriber may sell If you are area are area a pessimist then conclude that it will be money lost to you But in that event please recognize the great good your money will have performed and hence it is not lost money For every dollar that we can dig up we can ean get ten dollars to togo togo togo go with it for irrigation Dead Mans Man's bench benh White river Ouray Valley South Myton l Blue bench and many minor projects should all be taken over by the Ule people who are arc here now Pessimists will let the matter rest because the Job appears too big Dig and when hon the time is ripe for large capitalists cn th these e great land deals will be taken over and the profits to imported will go so to new men brains and money Let us get inflow In now flow and sta start t t like business ourselves borrow the money what we need at once ti which we cannot pay into the treasury this year This means handling big biff business work at Washington Salt Lake City Denver and hard planning all along te to line But we wo are entitled to make the Oie profit on th the new deals as well as get the result of such efforts that thatis is a big increase in land values and anda a railroad The fhe man at Vernal Verni may at first dislike dislike dis dIs- dis- dis like to put in money for fOT helping Upper Upper Upper Up Up- per Blue bench but tile We Vernal man I Ihas has big deals that will be in the plot I Tills This business is vital to each and every overy town and to each citizen who has the interests of the basin at matters to heart hea We v have some discuss that should not be published publish pUblish- ed and there are details should be held for the directors only after the organization shall have hav been perfected Conditions force us to take the difficulty difficulty difficulty dif dif- by the horns ourselves and do something now Every o owner oner ner of land should be ready heady to take a hold do dohis dohis dohis his part It wont won't break you it wont cripple you financially If the matter is once set on foot it ft is certain certain certain tain that many many manya a man who at first took a block of stock will soon double his holdings Big Dig things are right ahead The other fellow will wll take it U up soon but we should take it now A lot of inside information information tion on this railroad and irrigation business has not been published yes a whole lot A few men successful making money as things now are may no not want to join They are arc satisfied In Ina a J. short time they can sell out am and go to a a. better country for ease and comfort But this class is not important important im im- im- im although they may have hav some fine argument t against disturbing disturb disturb- ing illg the placid quietude of things It is ts to the the- average farmer land landowner landowner landowner owner to whom this appeal is ad ad- dressed If each community will se select select select se- se lect good men a general meeting about one man for each hundred votes cast last election sending men who have foresight ambition brains only good can Ican result Such action will cost little will wUl bind nobody but bu but should be the opening opening- of the long closed season out out here A gathering of ot fifty fitly to seventy five men so selected select select- ed will result in good It Is worthy of your most careful consideration Its up to you Come to Roosevelt Roosevel March l 10 1 p p p. m. m Forget personal personalities ties just think of the big job the handling of which this
