According to the art muse um biography, the building was built in 1880 and was home to The Sugar Company until it was abandoned in 1979 A part of St. Georges historic dis trict, the building was bought and renovated in 1997, as it became the home of the art museum. Utah-Idah- One such painting, Despair, by Birgit Wudenka McMullen of Rockville, depicts a female in the painting consumed with flames, with light images of bottles peeking out at the observer. She looks desperately lonely but subdued and ojvj, o jeke c e rate ear, .shi r untouchable. sc ,iii sSOC r.Mt gt Regional 2003 Seventh Annual Juried Art Exhibition Winner Fiona Phillips showcases "Wet Sand, Oceanside 2 sen from all categories of art including watercolor, oil photography, painting, mixed media, drawing and pastel, acrylic, and ceramic. All forms of media and styles of expression are accepted, and the exhibition is open to the public. Regional 2003 winners currently on display at St. George Art Museum by Wendi Epps Dixie Sun Staff Writer The Regional 2003 Seventh Annual Juried Exhibition winners are currently on display at the St. George Art Museum. The jurors could only choose 100 pieces from the 250 entries to be in the show. Eighty-nin- artists e participated, and artists can submit up to three pieces of art. Entrants are all from Utah, Nevada and Arizona and entries are done in slide format to increase the convenience for participants. The $20 entry fee pays for the cash awards. The competition is in its seventh year. Winners are cho Fiona Phillips, The Best of Show winner, received $300 for her painting Wet Sand, Oceanside 2. Phillips is a resident of Cedar City. The Best of Show winner receives his or her own exhibit, for display at the next years regional exhibit. Last years Best of Show winner, Robert Barrett, has his exhibit Life Drawings on display on the top floor of the museum. Barrett is a professor in the Department of Visual Arts at BYU and has 15 works of art on display in his exhibit. The Solo Exhibit Award is the only award not chosen by the jurors, but by the board of .uch the museum. This year is the first time a winner was chosen-unique gastropod jar crafted by Susan Harris from Cedar lent City. dam Dmi three-dimension- he a as as if DSC student Matt Rogers of Washington City, entered two pieces, including the Bust." Cowboy Rogers carves figurines out of wood, and has been perfecting his hobby over many years. Several pieces of art were displayed, including Nnamdi Okonkows bronze sculptures. Okonkow is originally from Nigeria, and now lives in Provo. A painter for the better part of his life, Okonkow attended BYU Hawaii where he discovered his love for bronze sculpture. Joanne Smith of Orem presented her painting Safe Place for Seven.
