A new survey by Roper Starch Research, however, points to a maturing number of college students' attitudes toward nutrition and a desire to lead a healthy lifestyle. Unfortunately, college students' path to healthy eating is paved with good intentions like quick-fi- x diets, skipped meals and food and beverage choices that are missing essential eat a diet. Some experts now believe that college campus's across the country are facing a type of "calcium crisis." According to the College Eating index, which really exists, a survey of more than 500 American college stu THI AT D I their diets, many college dents are focusing on foods devoid of nutritional value. While 82 percent report they choose a beverage because it is "good for me," three out of four students report they drink only one glass or less of milk a day. The recommended dailv allowance of calcium tor college-aged people can be met by drinking at least three glasses of milk. "While college students say they are concerned about health, they still have a lot to learn about nutrition," says Susan Barr, Ph.D., professor of nutrition at the University of British Columbia. "The current obsession with fat and calories has college students cutting out meals and certain foods that their bodies need." Because only 26 percent of college students report drinking a glass of milk daily, they may be consuming beverages that are devoid of nutritional value as well. Page Correction Last week.
