"This is a wonderful thing for Dixie College," said Dean of Students Bill Fowler. "It increases the potential for Dixie College to expand to well over 5,000 students." The Board of Regents appropriated $6 million for the purchase. The deal is contingent on the City of St. George building a new convention center. Although all plans are not finalized for the college's control of the Dixie Center, a centralized computer system is envisioned for the Smith Convention Center, Fowler said. The existing Dixie Center fitness center will be free of charge to all registered students, he added. Under a current proposal, physical education credit will be available to students taking advantage of the center. A student who utilizes the fitness center for 10 sessions at one hour per session will receive one credit, and for 20 sessions receive two credits, he said. Fowler also said some members of the community are worried about a conflict with the school fitness center and fitness centers around the city, but Fouler sees no problem. strong correlation between tire plan and the fitness center," he said. "It gi es both students and the community access to classes." Dixie College's acquisition of the Dixie Center will not be final for about two years, Fowler said, because the city can't complete a new convention center for at least that "There's a long. Utah Sen. David Watson and Reps. Bill Hickman and Met Johnson played key roles in the acquisition of the Dixie Center, Fowler said.
