Theodore Roosevelt. Did you know that the Biological department is fast becoming - an important factor in the institution? Just recently we have received one of the best Oil Immersion microscopes the Spencer Lens Company has for sale. John Findlayson, an explorer, for whom Findlayson River and Findlayson Lake in Yukon Territory were named, died on January 8, aged one hundred and five years. Findlayson, who was a native of Scotland, prospected and mined gold in California and Oregon until he was eighty-si- x years old; then went to British Columbia and Yukon territory where he explored large areas that white men had never penetrated. Science. I once traveled with a sheep man who could see nothing but wool on the fences, sage brush, good woolen clothing, and mutton on the table. Are we all narrowed into some particular line? Do we all see the manifold wonders of nature? Can we lend a listening ear and catch the sweet song of the many wonderful birds of this vicinity? Do we see beauty in the sprouting grass, the budding trees and the beautiful wild flowers? If we do not there is something wrong. Science Dept. The Tobacco Evil The Lord has said tobacco was made not for the use of man, but for a medicine for bruises and sick cattle. In the toilsome pathway of life there are many obstacles which hinder our progression, and tobacco is one of them. Tobacco is a narcotic which has a strong disagreeable smell and an acid taste. This narcotic drug is extremely poisonous. It stimulates the nervous system in such a way that a craving or false appetite is produced which can be satisfied only by further using, if this is denied the individual becomes nervous, irritable and depressed, but if he smokes the nerves are soothed and tired muscles have a spirit of rest. Tobacco is placed before the child by older men whose practice of using it has formed a relish that is so strong that it is almost unconquerable. We all know that tobacco contains nicotine and that this substance is harmful. Boys and men confess that this injures their bodies and character. Why do they take this injurious poison? It is just simply because they have the habit fixed upon them in youth and they cannot, or at least do not, resist the temptation. Tobacco causes one to be soreeyed, sickly and short winded. The users are more subject to pneumonia and diseases of the air passages. Besides producing the weakened action of the heart known as tobacco heart, nicotine has a marked effect on the boys brain. Dr. McKee ver reports that out of 2.336 youthful students attending the public schools, only six were reported as bright students. Dr. J. W. Seave reports the breathing capacity of the nonusers as 77 more than the users. Nicotine has been injected into the veins of a large healthy cat.. The animal was unable to breath minwell and within twenty-tw- o utes it was dead. Parents and teachers, if you want us to grow up to be virtuous women and good men then help us remove the tobacco evil. We, the students of the Wood- ward School appreciate the one step you have taken in asking the merchants of the county to discontinue the sale of this poison. If this move is successful it will be a great advantage for the young people and will also be a great boost, for the church high school, for it will increase the number and quality of the students. Fathers, if you would, make companions of your boys, instead of letting them go in bad company, it would greatly decrease the number of evils. And if you would get closer to your sons you can help them overcome this habit but if you are numbered with the users of tobacco, you ought also to refrain from it if you want your son to do so. Helen Miles, Seventh Grade, Dixie Training School. David met her at the gate As the sun was sinking low, They walked along the shady lane In the twilight afterglow. David let down all the bars, But she neither smiled nor thanked him; Indeed she knew not how, For David was but a farm lad And she a jersey cow. Rodney spell mule?
