Show SPIRITUAL UNION how necessary it is that the lat ter day saints should be united in their views upon doctrine and principle or in other words upon spiritual things upon this harmony depends their unanimity upon temporalities ties which should be influenced and indeed governed by principle and doctrine the lord has informed the church that all things are spiritual to him and that at no time has he given unto man a law or commandment that la Is temporal all things are governed by law therefore whether the statutes of the lord relate to what are called temporal things or otherwise they are eternal and spiritual prom from this standpoint it will be seen that union in earthly matters must bean be an outgrowth of the same condition in regard to espiritu ali ties hence the order of all things pertaining ding to the economy of god firstly spiritual tuil secondly temporal spiritual unity is therefore of first importance as when whelm that thai condition is absent absen tto to the same degree harmony in other re respects is not present spiritual harmony depends upon a general understanding and acce acceptance of truth chien consists of things as they have been are and d ever will be this being the ce case the higher hither phase of union depends upon enlightenment and not mere acceptance A person may accept of a truth as such without having any particular understanding of N it Z and thus receive largely of its benefits especially it if it be a saving gospel fact but his position is not as elevated as that of him wb who ha ba combined acceptance with comprehension between the tat two classes there is a degree of union aa both having received the t truth ruth but only one understanding it when one reaches the higher point attained by the other the oneness will be complete for they will not only accept alike but also see fee the same way to reach this desired position tiou requires a constant effort which must be reciprocal those not having understanding knocking at the door of knowledge that it m may be opened and the others hi by in st ruction aiding them in their efforts to reach the light all CO combined m bained drinking at the fountain of the spirit of truth the great universal teacher and the lord enjoins upon his people that they should seek to understand doctori doctrine n e and principle n but t not to en tor ter into passionate disputations disputatious garding jing them in the first place when there is a divergence jodl leading ag 1 I I 1 to a difference of view it may be that one side may be right but impossible that both can occupy that position on the other hand both may be in error and as to a disputation especially when with intensify of feeling both participants are wrong in engaging in it when one dla autant is devoid of passion and tike the other is fired by it the calmer almer person should cease at onoe once as a con leads to bad results and no element of good accrues accrue wh when ei i in conversation conver bation tation or discussion 8 a man permits himself to be influenced by impatience he shuts the door of reason 1 as soon as he opens the gate of anger spiritual schisms are occasionally created by men of speculative minds who are a always ways grasping after what might be designated for convenience veni ence sake ground li the principal I 1 mischief created by k Y Ws class flows from the public depression kp of their views we have had numerous instances 44 of of young people calling at F this office and propounding questions I 1 in n relation to doctrines advanced by men of the class now referred to in some cases the utterances te rances that have caused commotion among some of the people have been delivered by some man of experience per peri jence ence and presumed mature judgment in a young peoples peopled meet sag ing others again have spoken about mysterious subjects in quorum meetings and other such gatherings A malmay man may not be curtailed in his bis mental flights hut but order and disei discipline pline require that he should be sio far as relates to the public expression of his views when they conflict with accepted doctrines when his ideas cover ground that Is essentially new without any other ingredient of objection un ups ices it comes from the head bead at of the church his authority va W promulgate them does not exist anything rAny ny thing now new that affects the general faith of the church must necessarily come first through the head without such a rule the church auld would become segregated in its 7 filth AM and spiritual schisms would 4 multiply to the che saints the lord promises an understanding of the principles of his ee onomy economy his people will receive line upon line and precept upon precept until they shall see gee eye to eye that elevated spiritual plane could never be attained if the L safeguards against doctrinal segre gation arara were disregarded |
