Show The Deseret Sampler, Fri., October 19, 1973 Strictly television New shows take back seat in ratings race by Cary A. Tomasello a Last year at this time two new shows had broken into the top ten of the Nielsen ratings; this year Diana, the highest rated new show, came in at the number 29 spot. Planet of toe Apes on CBS was the top rated show of the week ending September 16. CBS had 11 of the top 12 shows for the first weeks ratings. In order were, All in the Family, MASH", Hawaii Five-OMary Tyler Moore", Tuesday night Bob Newhart, Bamaby Jones, Evel Knievel movie, (ABC), Cannon, Maude, Carol Burnett, and Sanford and Son (NBC) came in 13th. Lotsa Luck on NBC was going to be one of the shows reviewed in this column, but since it can no longer be seen in the Intermountain Area, theres no sense in that. It was taken off because of objectionable material. 1 have for always been of the opinion that people can choose themselves and ought to have the right to do so. Its similar to objecting to an X rated movie in a theater. No one is being forced to go to the movie just as no one is being forced to watch a television program. Its hard to know where to draw the line, though. Los Angeles newsman, is Tom Snyder, 37 year-olthe host for the 60 minute show. The program has no audience, no band, and is based in Los Angeles. Snyder has been in broadcasting for 18 years. Rudy Tellez, toe shows producer, and former Tonight Show producer, explained that the show will not be the ordinary talk show with stars and well known people. The first show didnt have any stars, but the subject was familiar Croup Marriage. Snyders first guests comprised a triad. Peter Heck and Suzy Heck were married for fifteen years before Maureen came to dinner and ended up staying as a sort of live-i- n maid and second wife. Snyder handled toe interview nicely by listening to his guests and asking intelligent questions about a familiar, n but situation. On the same show was another triad made up of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick LaFollette and the third member, Joseph Hoffman. The LaFollettes had been married only four years before they took in another member of the family. The third discussion was with a couple, Percy and Amy Cartzdafner, who had been married for 60 yean and still had a conventional marriage. They, of course, were against the group marriage type arrangement because they had been happy with their situation. The conclusion from the hour was to do your own thing, which is what people do anyway, but the show was enlightening about group marriage. Its too early to tell yet, but like all other shows on the air, there will be interesting and boring shows. But if you cant get to sleep, Tomorrow may be a good break from the movie, which leaves something to be desired in the Intermountain Area anyway. The following program schedule is for the Intermountain Area stations located in Salt Lake City. The only change in toe schedule is that at 9:00 p.m. on Saturday nights is now filled by Kojak on KSL. hours-a-da- Godless Parents At fust Hush, the ,yjjpHw seeking to adopt a baby boy seemed to be well suited for parenthood. They were a devoted, idealistic young couple, with high standards of morality. But there was a problem. They i did not believe in a Supreme Being. Was this grounds for disqualifying them as adoptive parents? After a court hearing, the judge said it was not and granted the adoption. It would be unconstitutional, he said, for the state to require a belief in God in order to adopt a child. The First Amendment not only requires the state to be neutral between various religions, but between added the judge, as well. religion and days-a-wee- y, d little-know- . non-religi- Promoted These Privates First Class were recently promoted to the rank of Specialist 4 at Headquarters Company. Thus, in another case, a court ruled in favor of adoptive parents (and against the childs own father) partly because of the religious atmosphere of their home. As one judge put it: Religion and morality are inextricably interwoven in the lives of most people in this country, and belief in the tenets of a religion may be indicative of moral fitness in a particular case. Furthermore, it usually helps if the would-b- e parents and the child have the same religion. Often, state laws call for this matching up" of religious affiliations. But again, this is not a rule. Thus, courts have allowed adoptions when it would take considerable time to find adopting parents of the same faith. Reason: the importance of promptness in arranging placements. In' view of the emphasis placed by child care experts on a stable and wholesome environment in early infancy, said one court, delay must be deemed detrimental. hard-and-fa- st K Air Mail, Parcel Air Lift, Space Available Mail. g UMiMxiea(EsflKSRxssN(saKBS(BKsaxKxstts!eax!MiessaxMMKiewsxsRxxiM(ieiKsad . usual mam bit Performance awards An American Bar Association public service feature by Will Bernard. 0 1973 wwnut American Bar Association FKIBtT TWtMT OKI Flogging gone thanks to UCMJ by Bob Reed If you are one of those who enlisted after 1874, youre lucky. That was when they changed the Articles of War which had been used by our Aimed Forces since 1775 (revised in 1806 to conform to the new U.S. Constitution). THE 1874 REVISION sort of sissyfied toe action. Not only could you not be marked or branded anymore you couldnt even be flogged! The original articles had mirrored the British Armys. They had been adopted by the Second Continental Congress on the advice of a committee which included one George Washington, not too long before he became The Man in our own Continental Army. Through the years the articles were modified by Presidential Executive Orders and Acts of Congress. Then in 1950 the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), applicable to all of our Aimed Forces, was enacted by Congress. Both systems are rooted equally firm-- , ly in the Constitution and its precious Bill of Rights. But take a guy who walks off his civilian job. He hasnt com- -' mitted a crime an offense against toe public welfare hasn't hurt anybody but himself or his family. But a member of the armed forces who goes AWOL might indeed put others lives on the line by imperiling a mission definitely a crime! Of course, the UCMJ also deals with offenses condemned by civil law murder, larceny, assault and the like.. AND HOW ABOUT those stationed overseas who' commit crimes? An underlying imperative of justice is that it be administered promptly and uniformly throughout the world. The UCMJ allows the military to do this as a unit. On top of that, our Constitution doesnt suggest that we send our judicial system to foreign nations. Just as well, too. They might just be a tiny bit irked if we tried to convene U.S. courts on their soil. In essence then, the UCMJ gives the military a legal system which can both define offenses and dispense justice promptly anywhere without involving the U.S. government as a whole. (AFPS) Ken Sly,.
