Show Sportscqpe No Breathing Room In 11,e DESERET SAMPLER VTHZ&etlBnWHRH kg MIL East The National Hotkey League is getting right down to y the now as with ten games left in the season, jast seven points separate the top five teams in the East and Oakland is just two points out of the fourth plavoff ' spot in the West. The rate in the East is nowhere near over as each team faces each division rival at least once with jast two exceptions; Montreal will not face Detroit and Xew York does not play Chicago. The season ends April 5 and it could well lie that nothing will lie decided until those games are played. The two keys to success for the established dubs will he how they do in their remaining games with Western teams and how they handle themselves the last two weekends of the season. Those games with the West are very important as evidenced ly the fact that the Boston Bruins, who have lost only one n contest in 34 tries, are in first in the East. Without their Western success the Bruins place would lie fighting for a playoff spot instead of leading the league. The last two weekends of the season are important lecaase the teams in the East will have an series. For example, on the 28th and 29th the Bruins play Detroit and on the 4th and 5th thev face Toronto. Chit-ag- o may have the lriggest problem liecaase final series, on the 4th and 5th, is with Montreal and, their . if the Canadians should come into that weekend without a sure spot in the playoffs, the Frenchmen will le flying. Montreal has a big sclieduling advantage that sees them play six of their last eight games on home ice. Tliey played at L.A. and Oakland this week and now play onlv New York and Chicago on the road. On the oilier hand, ; the Red Wings play six of their last ten on the road al- though three of those games are with expansion teams. Right now it looks like only Boston and Chicago are sure liets to reach the playoffs wliile Detroit, New York and Montreal will fight it out for the other two spots. Toronto , is not mathematically eliminated, hut to gain a plavoff slot they would have to pick up 17 points in their last 10 games. In the fight' for fourth in the West Minnesota led as of Wednesday, The North Stars, however, must play three Eastern teams to the Seals' two and face six road games to the Seals' four. The fight will probably- lie decided when the Stars and Seals face each other in Minnesota on the 24th and again in Oakland on the 29th. If Minnesota can sweep those games they will get the nod, but if Oakland can get the victories the lwttle will pruliablv go down to the last weekend. If they split, the North Stars would still have a slight advantage in that they completed their season series with St. Ijoiu's Tuesday with a tie while Oakland mast take on the Blues two more times. nitty-gritt- n home-and-ho- - llu- air tu set OPENING NIGHT up a spike lor Iciimmatc Marh Chip Know lion of the Officers goes high in er (L) as an unidentified Hospital player looks on.
