Refuse delivered at the sanitation fill on Reservoir Road in English Village is packed, compressed and buried while operating the bulldozer on the pile of di warded items. Various forms of ammunition and components of explosives cali-liThirty-eighave been found in the debris from calilier Hornet rifle amhandgun animuntion, tweutv-twmunition, and twenty gauge shotiiiin ammunition are a tew ot the types of live ammunition which lias lieen found in the refuse pit by the sanitation crew. Operation of heavy equipment over some of the items found in the refuse could possibly result in a detonation. Fire, always a hazard, would lx especially dangerous if live ammunition was involved. Where do these items come from? Carelessly discarded hunting dr target ammunition is part of it. Souveniers collected in the past wars or even from here at Dugway are potential sources. Is is it against reflations? . . . can it lie stopped it dangerous? liefore someone is injured? YES! It IS dangerous to discard ammunition in this haphazard manner. Most people don't really know what they have when they collect munitions. Unsuspecting sanitation crews cannot lie counted on to avoid each dangerous item discarded at the refuse pit. It IS against regulations to discard ammunition or explosives in refuse pits. AMC Regulation 385-22paragraph 2708, says liurying explosives or ammunition or dumping them into waste places, pits, wells, marshes, shallow streams or inland waterways is prohibited. It IS going to lie stopped someone is injured. This can be accomplished by the citizens of Dugway. Realization of the hazard involved when ammunition or explosives are carelessly discarded is the first step. The next step is to promise ourselves we will only dispose of these items in an acceptable way. The Safety Division will coordinate all disposal requests made by Dugway personnel.
