Show n LDG The Sampler, February 13, 1986 Leftteira:-fto-ftlho'llftdif- MP reputation by Rick Fulton Having been around the Public Affairs business more years than 111 readily admit to, I'm 99 percent of the opinion that "news people aren't news - makers," and aside from bylines - should stay out of the spotlight. Every now and then, though, something happens that presents itself as the exception to that rule. A good case in point is the Letter to the Editor concerning the driving habits of the post MPs which was in the last issue of the Sampler. As you know, the post Public Affairs Office licy concerning letters to the editor is to provide a way for individuals to express their opinions. As long as the letters don't violate libel laws, are truthful and are done in good taste, then they are' printed. There, are always two sides - and sometimes more to every issue. Letters to the editor provide a way for the post community to talk to the command group and. to the community at large about issues and items that are important to the members of this community. That also means that if the Sampler receives a letter from a concerned resident about the way public affairs covers school news, military news, sports or what have you, then that letter gets printed. What's good for the goose is good for the gander, as the cliche goes. Well, such was the case with the letter about the poor driving habits of some post military police that was printed in the last newspaper. -- -- untarnished by action of few individuals - The post provost marshal, Lt. CoL Ron Nickels, called me about the letter. He wasn't bothered that it was printed in the post newspaper, but he did want to make the point that anyone having a complaint about post MPs should call him direct, and pass along their concerns. Speaking as a PAO, I found his attitude refreshing. His main concern, which he wanted us to pass along, was to tell the Dugway community that he is always available to talk about situations involving law enforcement and law enforcement people stationed here at Dugway. Speaking as a private individual, the letter about the MPs really touched a nerve with me. You see, back when I was 18 years ' old, I was in the Air Force version of the MPs. Later, as a civilian,! worked a couple of years as a police officer. I'm not debating what the letter writer stated in her letter concerning poor driving habits of some MPs. I'm quite sure she is right. I know for a fact that there are some cops, military and civilian both, who at times are really rotten drivers. Let me quickly add that there are some FORMER cops that fit this description as well (and raise, my hand in rather guilty fashion). Am I a bad driver all the time? I don't think so; at least, my driving record doesn't indicate this. Do I make mistakes sometimes, when I am behind the - wheel? You better believe it. How noticeable are those mistakes? Ms. Chandler stated that she had to, "dodge out of the way of one MP vehicle." I would ..not accuse, Ms. Chandler of any wrongdoing, and I understand that there- jsu limited space for walking on the sides of streets on Dugway, but I have seen it necessary for drivers to drive on the wrong side of the street (or appear to be aiming at the pedestrian with their vehicle) because the pedestrian was walking so far out in the street. I am not in complete disagreement with Ms. Chandler. No - . . . day-by-d- ay Yesterday, I was having breakfast in a restaurant out of town. Amid the clatter of dishes goes on and on. Granted, I have seen a few MPs who aren't deserving of the title, but I feel safe in saying that for the majority of us, setting an example worthy of being followed is extremely important. If any residents of Dugway have a complaint about the actions of any of the MPs, , they and background music, I found jnyself studying people this time, two waitresses. One worked as though she were in She moved slowly, took long drags on her endless cigarette, reluctantly filled coffee ctips and smiled only at one truck driver who was lying about her "slim - semi-retireme- . nt. , figure." - The second my waitress -moved with almost constant speed, clearing tables, anticipating customers needs, chatting with each warmly, she to. attended person . Curious, but with some hesiyet-briefl- y, tation about interrupting her stride, I caught her attention during her next coffee visit to my table and asked, "Doesn't it bother you that your friend over there does half the work you do, and you probably don't get paid any more than she?" . Without missing a stride, she grinned and said in a crisp voice: "Honey, I've been waitnV tables a lot o' years, and one thing I know; I get paid to do my job as good as I can, not to sit 'round and watch what ain't being 1st Poets, songwriters, novelists and soap operas address the topic of love. Comparing our work with the kid at the next desk in school is not a bad way to get our bearings, as we grow up. But when do we stop comparing notes? People who are MPs or civilian police are always in the spotlight. They do their job in the public eye, and they do a super job 99 percent of the time. But they are also human beings and human beings make mistakes. We all know that. I'm optimistic enough to believe that one MP seeing another commit a serious moving violation would take the proper action. At least, I expect that that would happen. I remember, back when I was a member of the Air Police, that my shift supervisor got a ticket for speeding from a friend of mine. I remember it well because of his easy going attitude on the matter, and his praise of the person who wrote the ticket. I guess what I'm saying is, that if the person who complained in the letter to the editor had reported the. incident to the MP desk sergeant, my hunch is that the report would have been taken quite seriously, and it would have been investigated. That i the way the game works. Another case to use again that of what's good for the goose overworked cliche.
