Ejm new challenges era The fast moving Abrams Ml Main Battle Tank is facing tough, new challenges at the Armys Yuma Proving Ground.' The challenge centers around an effort to tank's air filtration sysimprove the n tem, with the trials coming on the installa- -' tions test courses some of the harshest terrain in the United States. On earlier models of the Ml, air filters had to be removed and cleaned manually. This version of the 60-to- tank-sport- 1,500-horsepow-er an experimental x i crri cirjZzzj s 3 Air Filter (SCAF) which is said to reduce or eliminate Self-Cleani- ng the need to pull the filter. Overall, the Ml is vastly superior to the M60 series tanks it is replacing, according to Jerry Roach, site manager and field representative for Generaly Dynamics. Its superior fire control system is not hampered by darkness, fog or rain, he said. According to David Gardner, Ml project test engineer here, the Ml was 'sent to the Proving Ground primarily to test the new system against the rigors of the installations famed dust course. The SCAF is said to clean itself by using compressed air from the engine. The air goes to a nozzle and blows on one side of the filter .while the vacumn creatd by the engine exhaust sucks the dust off of the dirty side of the filter, Gardner said. After the tank is run so many miles, the filters are taken out, checked for leaks and weighed to see how much dust has accumulated, Gardner said. Conventional filters must be removed by . Although they were only scheduled to take the team up twice each day, things went so well that they ended up making 5 trips the first day and three the second. The MlEl concept first began its test phase around a year ago. When all the tanks will be changed over is unknown, Roach said. Special armor for anti-tan- k defire pon threats, a low profile, automatic tection and suppression system, laser light reduction filters bn all crew viewing and sightfeaing equipment, and speed are some of the tures of the Ml. According to Roach, the Ml engine uses diesel fuel, but various grades of jet fuel and gasoline could be used in an emergency situation. After the dust and endurance test are finished on the SCAF modification, the Ml will go to the dynomometer course. If the SCAF passes all of the tests, it will enter the Armys inventory.
