Show THE SAMPLER pirits Friday, Mar. 26, 1982 Youth by Steven Hoover For those of you who thought the Public Affairs Office had gone into hibernation the weekend that the Mustangs won the state championship, youre partly correct. Three-fifth- s of the office was in West Yellowstone, Montana freezing and riding snowmobiles while those of you who were razzing us were soaking up the rays in St. George. It was a tough decision and nobody felt worse about not going to St. George than myself. Apparently the media is not going to let the job the Mustangs did thfa year go unnoticed. So far each of the Mustang starters has been named to some type of team. ' Junior guard Steve Bruce was named to the Deseret News Class . post-seaso- n 1-- A state team, with John Witkowsld being named to the second. Witkowski was selected as the Tooele County Most Valuable Player by the Tooele Transcript and was joined by Bruce and center Garth Lawrence on the first team, r Joe Mohammed and Jeff Brothers were both named to the second team. Mohammed and Brothers were also named to the first and second all Region 11 teams along with Lawrence. Members of the Salt Lake Tribune teams were unavailable at press time, but were confident that Dugay will place a couple of players on that one also. All-Sta- te . Take in a ballgame . Well it has finally arrived. The season after the strike. This is also the time of the year when all the teams think they each can win the pennant. Unfortunately, not all can be satisfied. The teams that most of the experts are favoring to win their divisions are the Expos, Astros, Yankees, and A's. But as everyone knows, this is not how things always work. Here is a breakdown of how I think each team will finish and to tell you truth, mine are a little different. AL East Milwaukee Brewers r the Brewers won last years second season but lost in the playoffs to eventual American . League champ New York. The Brewers have a quality player at every position and with catcher Ted Simmons now knowing the AL hurlers he should hit his usual .300. Baltimore Orioles - The Orioles didnt have one of their better seasons last year but have made a couple of trades that will help. They dealt Doug third baseman DeCinces, their to the California Angels to make room all-st- ar for rookie Cal Ripken Jr. Ripken has had two good seasons in minor league ball and the Orioles feel hell be the next Brooks Robinson. In the DeCinces deal they got Dan Ford, an outfielder which .should, fill in at centerfield. Detroit Tigers - Sparky Anderson has put together a pretty good ball club, but is still a year or two away from the title. New York Yankees - What can be said about the Yanks. They have traded their power for speed and the loss of Reggie will probably hurt them as much as itll help the Angels. Although they have one of the best pitching staffs in the division its still going to be tougi for them to repeat as AL Champs. Boston Red Sox - The Sox are still rebuilding. Carl Yastremski is probably in his final season and Jim Rice is the only bonafide .300 hitter in the lineup. Dwight Evans still has the best arm in baseball but he shouldnt be expected to hit like he did last season. The strength of their bullpen will determine how they finish this year. Cleveland Indians - The Indians say they have no excuses this year if they dont win the title, but they better start looking for some. They sport one of the best pitching staffs (only the Yanks are better) but they dont have a bonafide slugger. Joe Charbeneau and Andre Thornton can knock the ball out of the park but only while theyre healthy. Toronto Blue Jays - Theyll probably be: fending the division for the first two to three weeks and then thinfp will return to normal so they can finish in the cellar. ALWest California Angels -- I like the Angels in this one because I think Reggie Jackson will bring out the best in the rest of the team. If Grich, Burleson, Lynn, Baylor and Carew hit like they are known to do they really have only one worry, pitching. 75-10- . NLEast St. Louis Cardinals - the Cards could have made the playoffs last year if it hadnt been for a late season faker. Whitey Herzog, wheeled and dealed again this winter and finally got rid of Gary. Templeton for Ozzie Smith. He also added Lonnie Smith to play centerfield. Watch for the Cards to score a bundle of runs. Montreal Expos - They missed by a single swing of the bat from going to last years series, but havent done enough in the off season to improve over last year. They 11 hang tough for most of the season but watch for them to finish second. Pittsburgh Pirates - They had a good spring and seem to have filled some voids in their infield. Although . they cannot deal rightfielder Dave Parker watch for them to try and deal someone for another pitcher. If Parker has the year hes talking about, he alone could lead them to the title. Philadelphia Phillies - Fourth is about as high as theyll finish. Mike Schmidt will hit 45-5-5 homers and Pete Rose will pursue Ty Cobbs total base hit record. Not much excitement in Philly. Chicago Cubs - Dallas Green has done alot for the Cubs but they have been down here for the last couple of. years, theyre getting used to it. New York Mets - With the addition of George Foster the Mets will score another 100 runs, but if the opposition outscores you by more youre iri trouble. NL West Houston Astros - These guys have been at the doorstep for the last three years and its finally their turn. They have absolutely the best pitching staff in baseball and the hitting to go with, it. But you dont have to score many runs when your pitchers give up leu than three a game. Cincinnat Reds -- 1 pick them to finish here because I dont think they can dethrone the Astros. Johnny Bench will piove to third base, which will give their left fielder plenty of action. LA Dodgers - They will have a let- down after their title year and Femanco Valenzuela will lose at least 15 games. Atlanta Braves - If anyone of this division has a chance to beat out the Astros its the Braves. They have had a great spring and have found a crop of new pitchers. Joe Torre wont be fired from this job. San Francisco Giants - They are about the same as the Cubs, theyll stay where they feel comfortable. San Diego Padres - Gary Templeton says he has a better attitude but not even him having a good season will save the Padres. Jets win championship In intramural basketball last night the Jets, coached by Will Jackson, defeated defending champion HHC 6 to take the title. The Jets were fed in scoring by Hal Abbenhaus with 26 and Rich LeClerc with 14. The win was the second of the night for them after they had lost earlier in the tournament fo the same 61-4- team. Royals - Now that they have settled with Amos Otis in centerfield, Dick Howsers Royals need to return to the form that got them to the World Series two years ago. Chicago White Sox - With the acquisition of Steve Kemp the Sox have added the lefty power that they need. They already have a bundle of good pitchers. Minnesota Twins - They will finish ahead of the Mariners, but just barely . Seattle Mariners - The only thing they have going for than right now is playing in the.
