Explorer By Ed Beaaley On April, 6, 1954, President Eisenhower honored a nearly forgotten Black man, in the White House. The occasion was the 45th anniversary of the discovery of the North Pole, and the man that Ike honored Matthew Henson. was Back in the 1890s, Admiral Robert Peary was looking for the right kind of people to help hir. locate the North Pols. He couldnt have picked a better man than Matt Henson, a Black man who had traveled the world looking for adventure. In 1908, after four failures, they decided to try one more time, and in April of 1909 Henson and Peary reached the pole by dog-sle- d. Henson had the honor of placing the American Flag at the exact spot of the North Pole. s: |
