Show is If HIE DESERET SAMPLER, Friday, Fetwwary 29, 1980 Girls basketball progress rapid Steve Larson must have feh a little like the commander of a sinking ship when he wasasked to coach the Dug-wa- y High School Girls basketball teams this year because he was starting in square one.' Though the George Duersch team theirseason with a JV and Varsity combined record of the coach had nothing but praise about the progress his teams made during the year. They really have come a long way since that first practice. When we first got together, the girls would apologize to each other for fouling. They werent really that 4-1- of last year graduated only Lisa Brauner and Robbin Wilkins, Larsen was left holding the bag because nobody decided to return. SO HIE coach was asked to take.a team comprised mostly of girls who had little or no experience and be competitive. Though Larsen and his girls ended . 8, enthusiastic, either. BUT TO show you how much theyve progressed you would have had to been at our last practice. The girls were so aggressive they scared me. Larsen began the year by explain- - THE STORE... Dngway prepare for Salt Palace showdown meet the Tooele When the Dugway in a game scheduled for the Salt Palace March 8 at 5 p.m., they will not have size and ex perience riding in their comer. But they will have Wilford Jackson, a former football and basketball coach during his tours at various other All-Sta- rs All-Sta- rs . installations. JACKSON, who is Dugways new Equal Employment Opportunity Officer, has also been involved with boxing and karate. Because of this background, he was picked to rs when the game was in its final coach the planning stages. My involvement in athletics was brought up at staff call, remembers Jackson, so I guess I seemed like a pretty good choice. BUT JACKSON was a little hesitant. Usually when I come into a new coaching job, I pick my own players for my own particular style of play. But this time it was done beforehand. But these players look good. They can all pass the ball well, have good floor instincts and are Bruces high school team practice a few days ago and they're amazing. They anticiate each others moves so well because theyve been playing together since grade school. WE HAVE a few players, like Lebron, Williams and Birdsong who play on the same intramural team, Jackson continued, but for the most part theyre pretty new to each other. What Jackson has done is to insert five basic of- fensives. ; good, accurate shooters.. These lend themselves to a lot of variations and options so werenot always forced to do womthing which wont work. alTheyre also easy to leam. The military is ways rotating, so I never use an offense that is too difficult to pick up in a short time. JACKSON has been putting his players through drills (recently cut to one hour) five days a week in preparation for the game. But Jacksons motivation, besides winning, is to give the crowd a fast-breand good game. I think if were able to should be pretty close, and get a few rebounds it an interesting ballgame. plays Tooele, including Tim Briggs, Willie Get A "JUMP All-Sta- j with alot of aggressiveness. The rest of Larsens starting five, including Paula Wold, Anita Palmer and Laura Rendon, were also beginning to jell. HIE result was a victory in their seventh game of the year, against In-- , termountain. But what was more satisfying to Larsen about the victory was the fact that they had played the school's JV team earlier in the year and gotten blown out by 30 points. It just goes to show you how much progress we had made in that short space of time. Larsen also pointed out that his JV team progressed, as well, matching the varsity record of two wins with victories over Manila and Wendover. Alison Brauner; Kim Majcher and Pat Glavin stood out as doing exceptional jobs, and Debbie Jones came in during the last half of the season and helped But all the girls have made strides. AT REGION Larsen hoped they ! was very gratifying. Larsen says the enthusiasm has carried over to next year. 'Theyre looking forward to it very much. This All-Sta- rs . ! IT WAS really enjoyable, Larsen said about the experience. Even though it was rough in the beginning, the girls progress during the season year, we had a lot of people in the stands for our first few games, but as we kept losing they began to thin out. The girls want to win now because behind they like, having the crowd ' them. With coach Wilford Jackson some unique coaching troubles. I NEVER knew when to yell at them because Id figured theyd break down and cry, Larsen laughs. And unlike the boys practices, which are serious, the girls would smile at each other and go out of their way not to hurt anyones feelings. Through all of this, Larsen and the girls kept working hard. As the season programed, so did his teams. From knowing absolutely nothing we began to do quite a number of things well on the .court, Larsen emphasized. The girls' began running the offense better, and our rebounding started coming along; Plus a lot of the girls made quite a few strides individually. FOR EXAMPLE, Jill Peterson had been starting on the JV team when the season began. But because she was playing so well, we had her on the first team varsity before the third game of the year. Lee Fletcher was another story. By the end of the season she was driving the baseline well and rebounding fo After losing to South Summits Wildcats, Larsens team defeated Manila setting up a rematch with period. Jackson will carry 11 men with him when he . Williams, Jim Endhal, John Jefferson, Chuck Birdsong, Richie Rodriguez, Rabbi Anderson, Tim Madere, Ben Lebron, Ernie Frazier and Mike Scott. BUT WITH these 11 Jackson has inherited a iroblem common to DPG athletics and .that is e doesnt have any height. Tooele supposedly has four people who are around 68, so we could be in for some trouble if we dont keep them off the boards and out of the middle. T counter this, the 43 year old will use a combination of team speed and sound fundamentals, which is something he stresses to his players everywhere he coaches. He will also use the press quite a bit, because he isnt sure Tooele will be able to handle it. Since they are tall, they might not be good handling the ball so well put some pressure on them and try to force a few turnovers. Another major problem is his players lack' of playing time together.
