Ard in the first part of 1970, teleview ers and moviegoers will have occasion to hear a lot about this actor. First, he Is scheduled for two successive guest performances on It Takes A Thief. The first is titled Steal Driving Man and features Dick Smothers as well as Ed. This is scheduled on Jan. 19. The following week Jan. 26 Ed appears on another episode titled Touch of Magic." Bette Davis will be the other star. Both shows indicate Ed is traveling in fast comapny. five feature movies, including Patton, story of the controversial of general World War II, which will be released early in the year. When Ed's record Is conhis sidered, accomplishments stand out as among the more unique in entertainment. He has been in televi- sion shows since 1951 and has appeared in more than 600 dramas in that time, which averages out to 33 a year. Many performers are happy if they have roles in six a year. Few actors can top that figure. Stars in series might do it if their shows run long enough, but only Jim Amess, Lucille Ball, Fred MacMurray and Ed Binns has roles in Ed Sullivan top Ed. many TV programs. On The Horizon One of the most enjoyable, charming and entertaining Oiristmas programs of each season is Jackie Gleason's Christmas fantasy. It will be repeated Saturday at 9 p.m. on Ch. 5. In the fantasy, Gleason stars as the Poor Soul. He fails asleep on a busy city street during the festhe season and dreams that a fairy princess ushers him to the realms of storybook characters. This is a comeuy about rome of the funniest characters Runyon ever created. Bette Davis plays a stellar role. The movie introduced to films. Mickey Shanghnessy and Edward Everett Horton create two funny Runyon personages. Among the family Christmas shows this weekend, one features Andy Williams and his brothers and parents on Andys own show at 9:45 p.m. Saturday. The Osmond Brothers, who will appear in the Salt Palace with Andy sometime early next year, will be on the show also. Another family Christmas program this weekend features Glen Campbell and his wife and children as well as his crew. It will be on Ch. 5 at 7 p.m. Sunday. 5 7 Of a different et Obscenities , Films Federal Communications Commission has decided it will prosecute networks and stations for boradcasting what is determined as language. For awhile, the FCC did not believe it had the power to regulate this particular facet of telecasting. An investigation has been launched by the Federal Trade Commission into the cutting of theatrical films which are shown on television. The FTC hasnt indicated which way the investigation will go, but the federal body has asked the networks to send information on which films have been cut, how much censoring has been done and by whom. off-col- CHARGE NOW . . . The program will be on Ch. 5 at 10:30 p.m. Music for the work was composed by Lynn Shurtleff, assistant professor of music at the University of Santa Clara in California. A James Dickey poem, For the First Manned Moon Orbit, is featured as for Mr. Shurtleffs music. Words will be sung by Santa Clara Chothe rale, accompanied by a chamber orchestra. This is the first network tel evision airing of SiiurtlefTa compositions. He has composed many works for chamber crchestras. He ilso has written two symphonies and a lareer work and composed Charlie Brown Suite, a jazz-typ- e piece. Although a native of California, Shurtleff has many Utah ties. His mother, Mrs. Helen Shurtleff, lives at 911 Catherine St., Salt Lake City. He has two sisters in Utah. Shurtleff attended BYU from 1957 until 1965 with time out to serve on a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-daSaints.
