Show DESERET NEWS, 10 A October 28, 19691 Tuesday, C ft Sheriffs Vote On Union of Salt The possibility Lake County Sheriffs Of five affiliation with a national jKilice union loomed today as ballots weie being leceived from deputy sheriffs. E. M. Barton, director, Utah State Council No. 54. , said only 15 more ballots of a total 91 required are needed for union affilia- tion. During ths last month depu- ty sheriffs have been contacted on the proposal by Barton's office. The director said today that 76 of the required 91 ballots have been received, he said. If all 91 ballots are received approving the union affiliation, then the Sheriffs Qffice would become a charter member of a national police union, Barton said. The union is yet to be named. MEET FRIDAY Delegates to the proposed union will meet Friday in Omaha, Nev., to ratify a constitution. Barton will attend. A convention, at which officers and delegates will be named, probably will be held bou1. a month after the Opwha meet. Salt Lake City policemen, already unionized, have voted unanimously to affiliate with f!.e same union. NATIONAL GROUP A national police organization such as the proposed group is what we have all Barton been fighting for, said today. The proposed union would be stronger than some other bargaining groups because it would be limited in membership to and would be organized only for police personnel, Barton said.
