Basketball games played by Brigham Young University have been photographed, sound on film, in action with sports announcers describing the action in Spanish, Portuguese and Japanese languages. South American informed that the films are supplied by the Church. Distribution of BYU basketball games started in 1967 when games were shown in 10 coui.tries, Including Argentine, Uruguay, Chile, Pent, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Guatemala, San Salvador, Nicaragua and Honduras. Two more countries, larag-ua- y and Colombia, joined the list this year. Next to soccer, basketball is the second most popular sport in South America. The availability of such films has been made possible through the work of translators, Walter H. Canals, who broadcasts the games in Spanish; Douglas Borba, Portuguese translator, and Murray M. Hoki, Japanese translator and coordinator. Programs are broadcast out of the Church-owneinternational shortwave radio stations WNYW and FM radio station WRFM in New Yoik to Latin American and European countries, in addition to local stations in Latin America, who rebroadcast the games by tape. d Responses received by Bonneville International Special Affairs from Latin American countries are interesting. Mission presidents tell of the goodwill promoted for the Church. From Mission, Salvador Guatemala-E- l a missionary wrote: That program from what I hear is really popular among the more affluent set of the city. It is so popular that a person has asked me to have you send him anything along the line of sports action . . . They have received nothing but praise from the public concerning the films. The people really love it and have taken the Cougars to be their own home team. i ! Pres. Rex N. Terry. Argentine Mission president, advised, We are r anxiously awaiting basketball films. I have talked with many people. We also plari to use them in our proselyting activities. The elders can use them to show to dubs and youth groups. The branches will also be able to use them for firesides and Mutual activities. - The introduction of sport broadcasts into Latin America is just another of several successful modem methods of missionary work.
