Show 0 rr LUMPY JAW. Answer to Subscriber. H. T. From the description you give of your cow, I would infer that she is affected with Actinomycosis, or Lumpy Jaw.' This is a fungus growth that affects animals and it is usually found in the region of the jaw. It may be taken into the jaw proper from wounds or abras;ons or into the mouth with food. I would advise ad-vise opening the enlargement, giving giv-ing free drainage to the contents syrringing the same with a solution of strong carbolic acid or crcolin and water. Or use zinc chloride in the opening you make. In this connection con-nection if it is a valuable animal it is well to use the potassium iodide treatment. Give two drams of potassium po-tassium iodide per day until the eyes Ibegin to water and the skin becomes scurfy. Then the treatment should be discontinued for a number of days and repeated if necessary. If the cow is only affected in the jaws or head the milk will be fit for human consumption. However, if this disease dis-ease has gained access to other organs or-gans of the body it should not be , used as this disease is transmissablc to human beings. The calf and other oth-er animals should not be allowed to associate with the cow having this disease as it may be transmitted by contact or by soiled food. In the packing houses that are under government supervision, the carcasses of animals (hat have this disease, that arc slaughtered, arc passed for human food if the lesions arc local. Thus if the head is the only part affected that part would be discarded and the remainder of the carcass used for food. |
