The Falcons host Viewmont this Friday night in Clearfield. By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports - The old came KAYSVILLE down and the new went up last week at Davis High School, thus ending an illuminated tradition which has stood over Dart football for decades. OF COURSE the tradition of night football games will remain, but the lights themselves are switched this past week. It had become a standing piece of conversation to some and maybe a bit of controversy to others about the old lighting system in the Davis High football stadium. The conclusion was a dim one but changing is a hard thing to do. WELL, IT finally happened. A mammoth Kaysville City Electric truck rolled into the stadium during k and withinin an hour or so had the old poles up out of their long-tim- e resting places. The next morning at 9 a.m. the new light poles were positioned and a few nights later workers were testing a lighting system which appears three times better than the one it just replaced. mid-wee- THE OLD lights had simply been an institution at Davis. Someone said they were brought across the Atlantic with the Pilgrims. They SWITCHING to linebacker this year will be Vaun Waite and others there include Taylor, Carter, Olivas and Clawson. The defensinve ends will be Folk, Barber, Hutchison, and Godfrey. Folk started there last year. had at least been what they were since Richard Stevenson, the present Davis High principal, came to town in 1960. That means they had stood over hundreds of football games and teams over the years, and usually pretty good ones. TWO JUNIORS, Price, and Shavers, could start in the defensive secondary. Of course the returning starters here include Hicks and Murray. Starkey will also see some playing time there. Weve got some quality kids, said Hancock, But the only thing that could hurt us is that weve got too many kids going both ways. If an injury comes along, it could kill us. But most high school teams have that problem. THE NEW lights are powerful. They possess three banks of lights on each of the four poles. With just one bank of lights on, its nearly as good as what system it replaced. Another plus with the new lights is that Dart fans might be able to see all of the plays from now on. The old poles had a way of blocking vision of a good play once in a while. The new poles are now set way back with vision problems no longer a problem. WHEN YOU have 145 kids out for football, you know the excitement is high. Weve still got 130 kids in pads. We feel really good about the incoming sophomore class, it looks like a strong bunch. Hancock likes what he sees so far, but is careful to remind his players that anything can and will happen. TO GET the lighting system here, the Davis County School District put up $15,000 just like it had done for all of the other lighted stadiums within the county. The rest of the funds were gathered together by the Kaysville Rotary Club with Mike Wagner heading that group. Wagner and his group did whatever they could to get the money in and they and others who were responsible for the lights will be honored on the first night the lights will be used and that will be Sept. 6 when Ben Lomond comes to town. CLEARFIELDS strength will be to run the football this fall, especially with people like Carter, Scott and others around. Those two could provide some get-uand going spark for this team. There are some new assistants in town.
