How can anyone forget four years ago the championship game in the 1. ay ton City minor leagues where 2b walks took place. I SUPPOSE another reason I've stuck with recreation is the support of our city council," continued Cook, "Our city fathers have the foresight to see what is needed and they do what is necessary to get the job done. Just recently the city council e hired another person to the recreation department. Her name is Janet Johnson and she joins Cook and Mark Thompson on the staff. Johnson has helped in the Layton program since 1977. Johnson will head up the womens recreation section along with the cultural section. Plenty of hitting, cutting men off, strikeouts, but no walks. The coach whose team had lost in extra innings was actualh quite excited about the way his kids had played. It was TWO FOLKS who make the Layton City Recreation Department go round are Jim Batchelor and Carter Cook. Cook is well into his fourth year as the recreation chief and loving every minute of his job. We've progressed here in Utah quite a bit, but were still way behind. I think weve got some poten- tial and so much more to learn. 1 THIS IS the guy who gave up a career and a lifestyle of teaching and coaching on the high school into the job level to dive head-firof being Layton City's recreation st director. is exactAnd diving in head-firly what he did over four years ago st and hardly has come up for a gulp of fresh air. HAS HE missed teaching? Does he miss the companionship of the other coaches he left behind? Teaching w as a grind, doing the same thing over and over. May be I was getting stale after 12 years w hich probably had a lot to do w ith the fact I left. But when I left my fear was that I'd miss the kids and coaching, which 1 have. MISS the comraderee with the coaches, the deep loyalty you develop after 12 years. Itsjust like when you go to war with somebody. On Friday nights we were at war and you develop that love and I CARTER especially feels the way he does because he himself is an and he himself came up in recreation programs in the area. You know what is really neat? asked Cook, Its to see what the recreation program does for kids like Jeff Moon, Brad Merrill and others. Ive been involved with this thing for eight years now and have seen those high school kids come up through this thing. The friendships and companionships are started here and they last forever. outdoors-type-perso- n I CAN still remember kids that played little league ball with. I later played with em in high school and theyre still good friends today. "It doesnt have to be sports to develop that either. We run an arts and crafts program where people with those interests can develop friendships just like anyone can. For four days a week theyre in there enjoying themselves as much as kids who like to kick around a ball." Cook admits that both times the Layton High football job came open in the past 12 months, his heart strings began to tug a little bit. It was a should I or shouldn't type decision. He even spent some serious time on the other side of COOK SAYS he knows that all people don't have the same likes and dislikes and thats why his program will continue to offer a diversified amount of activity.
