BLODGETT rip-ra- p Clipper News Editor BOUNTIFUL - Although there is some erosion from the rising Great Salt Lake, studies are being continued to dike and place berms around the Bay Area Refuge Disposal (BARD) garbage facility in West Bountiful. -- THIS MATERIAL could be stored at the (BARD) site and be ready for use when the diking and berm projects get underway, he said. Temporary diking of the lake water will be necessary on the west and north sides to allow the berm to be constructed, it was explained. Already the lake water has caused erosion of between 20 and 30 feet of the outer edges of the landfill, according to the BARD manager. of directors, comprised of a commissioner and mayors of six south county Davis County communities, decided last Tuesmaterials from day to obtain fill and construction projects to reinforce the west and north sides of BARD w hile berms are constructed. The board also agreed to apply to the Federal BARD BOARD rip-ra- p on-goi- Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) for federal funds to help pay for cost of reconstructing the areas damaged by the rising water of the lake. CONSTRUCTION of the berms is expected to cost just over $400,000, BARD officials said. THE BOARD debated whether to postpone actual construction of the berms until after it is determined whether or not the lake level is going to continue to rise or to recede. If the lake level drops within the next few years then perhaps we should postpone construction of the berms, suggested Woods Cross Mayor Lawrence Urry. DOUG TODD, designer for the downtown traffic plan, emphasized that this will be only a drop in the bucket to the overall need of up to 1,500 additional parking spaces that will be needed with the proposed expansion and development of the downtown area during the next few years. Most of the additional parking will be parking and will be provided by the developers as the RDA development project expands, he said. off-stre- et MR. BARD officials also discussed methods of pumping water from nearby Barton Creek onto the site to reduce dust and improve fire protection when a blaze erupts or smoldering debris is discovered. rip-ra- p BARD MANAGER Elmer W. There is nothing inherently evil about car salesmen. (I imagine that God created them in His own image, too, although I doubt God smiles quite as much or hands out as many business cards.) Neither are they biologically unsound (although they do seem to lunge more than the general population-especia- lly when the customer begins to walk out the door.) And, to give them due credit, selling cars is certainly not an easy job. How would you like to spend 70 percent of your day smiling at people who have no money. ..and the other 30 percent explaining the term turbo to those that do? So I sympathize. ..but at the same time, they also fray my nerves.
