Show By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports the trophy as the meet ended in a 9 tie. CLEARFIELD drew Layton in the first round of the Brighton tournament last Friday and Tennis wasnt quite sure that he wanted to face the Lancers so soon. "But our kids came out pumped up and kept pumped up. Maybe it would have been different if we had of just faced them in a dual meet. I dont think we would have beat them that bad, stated Tennis. Hansen can't explain the reason his teams for the past ten years 29-2- CLEARFIELD -- - Layton High's long time dominance over the Clearfield Ealcons in dual meet wrestling should soundly come to an end on Thursday of this week in Clearfield. HE ONLY thing that could present the 1 raveling Trophy from earning its first spot on a Clearfield shelf would he if a major kidnapping of Todd Kopeeky, Merrill T Johnson and Dennis Langford were to take place Wednesday have enjoyed the success they have over Clearfield. Hes now in night. Not likely though! Clearfields John Walters Laytons Dottff Watts JIVS TEXACO, who sponsors the traveling piece of brass which represents supremacy between the two schools, probably could have begun to print Clearfield's name on the 1985 plate earlier in the week. Actually the eight-yea- r bullying that Clearfield has taken from Layton came to an end last Friday afternoon at Brighton High School where Scott Tennis '84 crew slaughtered Mike Hansen's team in the tournament. The Ealcons got a rally going and crushed Layton by more than 25 dual-me- points. SO IF Clearfield beats Layton again, then theres no question that Clearfield is ready to start a streak of their own. But Tennis says to hold on for a minute. "Let's not start celebrating 'till its over, he said. I HAVE never taken Layton lightly because they're well coached and super aggressive. They've really got nothing to lose now, since weve already beaten them this year. If we dont work hard and prepare, they could very well beat us, continued Tennis. Tennis also said that hed prepare his troops like everything was "on the line. "1 know Hansen be doing the same with his kids w ill too." said Tennis. ITS BEEN very frustrating for Tennis over the years to have never beaten Layton, prior to last Friday "Weve had teams in the past w here I thought we could have beat them but Layton came out and showed their aggressiveness and either tied us or upset us," said the Clearfield coach. The closest Clearfield came during Tennis seven years at head coach was last season but a penalty point called on him cost his team . Clearfields Andy A rchuletta Laytons Bret Whitesides finally they stuck it to us. That whipping we took at Brighton was a royal thumping. his tenth year at Layton and before the loss to the Ealcons last Friday, hed suffered only one other and that was a controversial win in his first season at Layton. MAYBE ITS just that weve WEVE BEEN down the past couple of years and with the exception of a few good kids, the talent has been thin. "Tennis came up to me after his team had beaten and said he was glad to finally win one. All I told him is that he deserved it. By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports - CLEARFIELD The matchups for the twelve weights this Thursday night in Clearfield when Layton takes on Clearfield in another annual dual match are as follows. This will also mark the opening of Region One dual match schedules for both clubs. 98 POUNDS - If Layton's Jacob Bench gets down to weight by Thursday it should be a fairly decent match betw een him and Clear-field- 's sensational sophomore. John Walters. Jacob had done pretty well prior to the Christmas break but failed to make weight in the Brighton tournament. If Bench is not there then Doug Watts will wrestle. Walters is aggressive and possibly one of the best sophomores Clearfield High has seen. He is nowhaving lost to Justin Julander of Davis and having tied him. - Il-I- -l 105 POUNDS - At this weight we will most likely see Clearfield's Gene Smith meet Layton's Ron Zimmerman. These two met earlier in the year for the championship of the Layton tournament of which Smith won. Tennis claims that Smith has to keep positive in order to win while Hansen says Zimmerman is getting betterevery week. Smith has a 13-- 4 record right now while Zimmerman is 105-pou- 7-- 7. 112 POUNDS - Layton's Bret 119 POUNDS - Either Steve Brown or Aaron Flint will represent Layton while Clearfield will send Eve Flores to the mat. Eloies is deaf but has made significant improvement as the season has gone along. Hansen feels good about either Flint or Brown. 126 Pounds - Clearfield's Scott Willard has taken over here after Greg Johnson hurt his knee. He'll be doing battle against Layton's Paul Arguello who is one of Layton's better wrestlers as of late. 132 POUNDS - Merrill Johnson is now 16-- 2 after sweeping all of his matches at the Brighton tournament. He will face Layton's Tony Butterfield who moved to M2 to take the place of Arguello who went down to 126. Bowers on the other hand is a sophomore who has done fairly well in recent matches. 167 Pounds - Another first year junioi for Clearfield is Jeff Butler who will take on Layton's Larry Ry nders. Butler, w ho has gained a ton of experience in recent weeks, w ill take on Lay ton's brightest spot of the year. Ry nders is currently 15-- 4 and has been awfully difficult to beat in dual matches. 138 Pounds - One of the night's better matches could appear here as two workhorses. Lay ton's Ci aig Phelts and Clearfield's Todd Kopeeky take on each other. Perhaps the favorite is Kopeeky w ho has more experience but don't count out Phelts complete'y because he's a fighter. Kopeeky has a record and is just a junior. Journal Sports Clearfields MerrillJohnson while Clearfield will send out Mark Martinez, a talented junior who is capable of upsetting Higgs.
