Show WEEKLY REFLEX, DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, MAY 9, 1984 Womens Track And Field Hard Work Makes Falcons Journal Sports Baggum Tough KAYSVILLE Itll be a run for the gold for Frank Thompsons Lady Dart track and field team this Thursday and Friday at East High School when all Region Four teams converge there for the 1984 region meet. By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports CLEARFIELD - Without mixing a lot of words, the primary -- reason Bart Thompsons 1984 gathering of womens track and field hopefuls are positioned for greatness, is because they work like a daggummed pack of mules. THE ONLY difference is, that the Clearfield girls are certainly a lot better looking. Its just been one of those years that several elite and talented women assembled together at the same school, women who dont mind a little hard work for success. That's the way Thompson put it in saying, Theyve pushed themselves into a championship position because they work hard and want success. AND ITS a championship the girls want. Theyve won back to back invitationals at Davis High and last weekend at Provo, but the girls would trade those two titles for what lies ahead in the next two weeks. The most prestigious honor of all would be to capture the region title this weekend and the state title the following week. Thats just the way it is, said Laura Zaugg, one of team's talent.' Mars, Nobody remem- bers von the invitationals as much as they remember who was the best at state. We've hopefully got what it takes to win it too. ANOTHER REASON Thomp son feels his womens team has climbed the ladder of success has been the success of the boys program. Were happy for the men when they have success and I think theyre just as happy for us when weve had some. Success has breed success in both prog- rams, said Thompson who referred to John Flints brigade that is right on track in winning a state championship in the next couple of weeks. This Friday and Saturday at Weber State College, the Clearfield gals will be hunting for a Region One championship, a quest that has Thompson a little worried. Right now weve got to get better if we expect to beat Webers depth. Its really got me worried. Well get our first places, but its a question of whether we can get the thirds, fourths and fifths, enough of them to win the whole thing, pondered the coach. STEPHANIE Clements will have to be there if the Lady Falcons expect to win. Shes been the whiz kid all year, coming away with several MVP awards at all the major invitationals around the state. Last Friday at the BYU Invitational she finally broke Susan DeVries 400 meter record with a time of 57.12. Now Thompson is pushing for her to break the 57 second barrier. At THOUGH THEY havent been exceptionally powerful in major in- Region Four went. BUT IM really concerned about Highland, said Thompson, Theyve got what it takes to win and Id classify them as the favorites. Wendy Hunter will hopefully be back from injuries this week. If ready shell run in the medley relay as well as the mile relay and open 400. Tammy Duke is another regular who will compete in the 400 and the three relays. might have just enough front line strength and depth to beat out Highland and Viewmont for the Region Four title later in the week. The Davis girls went undefeated in dual meets this year as far as SARAH HILLER will high jump and perform in both the medley and mile relays. Sonya Rees will see action in the 300 1M hurdles, long jump and a couple of relays. Cindy Sorenson will go at it in By KEITH DUNCAN - region Stephanie will compete in the 400, 200, the mile relay and either the 100 meter dash or possibly the sprint relay. Laura Zaugg is another Clearfield talent that will be counted on heavily, in fact just as much as Clements. At region shell run in the two hurdle races, the 200 and the 100 meters. Last weekend she defended her title in the hepthtalon at BYU and set a new record in the vitationals, the Davis women SINCE SHARON Anderson has come back from her injury, shes been on fire. Last Friday at BYU she won both hurdle races and this weekend shell run em again as well as the medley relay. Thompson will also use Sharon in either the mile or sprint relays. Junior Sue Thurgood will go after the javelin, shot put and discus crowns this weekend and Thompson says the team needs her to place in those events. TWO SOPHS, Annie Prokopis and Michelle Manning will figure in. Annie has long jumped over 15 feet and a jump like that again would fit nicely at region. Shell also run the open 400 meters. Manning will run in the 100, the sprint relay and possibly the 200 or mile relays. Other field event hopefuls will be Jana Mower in the shot put, a possible region champion, and Kerry Bell in the discus. SENIOR TAMMY Weaver is the in the long distance races. Also in the endurance runs will be Michelle Badoni and Alisa Chevez. Heather Briggs and Ann Loock might come through in the 200 meters race. Falcons top choice who in high THOMPSON, Davis Cindy Sorensen will give the Lady Darts strength in the distance races at region. Registration for American Youth Soccer Organization 51. We are a totally volunteer organization; we can improve only when more volunteers help Track Meet To Be Held because of the Utah High School Activities Association's ruling that they wont sanction anything during school hours. KAYSVILLE - Most track and field coaches around the state agree that the Davis High Track -- and Field Invitational is one of the best and despite the recent UHSAA ruling that events of its kind cannot be held during school hours in the future, want it to be BUT I think we can get away with getting the meet over with in one day, though it won't be as easy as it will be at Weber State where they have eight lanes compared to our six. Weber State has successin and fully run the boys one day so I dont see w hy we cant do the boys and girls in one continued anyway. THE DAVIS High event is presently the longest running track and field invitational of its kind in the state of Utah. It is the gathering for all boys and girls teams to compete in a major meet a few weeks prior to the state meet. It definitely wont be same format as in recent years, said Davis Highs Mike Shaw.
