BUT FOUR years later the 1984 gathering has turned the tide and will once again put the Falcons back in uniform there rather than watching from the stands. This week, beginning on Monday and proceeding through till Friday, Clearfield is competing with seven of the other top schools in the state for the top baseball prize. The Falcons opened their slate on Monday with an 8 p.m. game against Cottonwood. If they were to win, they would play on Wednesday at 4:30 and if a loss theyd also play on Wednesday but at noon. 4-- A IN GETTING into the state tour- nament, both Jeff Parry on the mound and Dave Peterson behind the plate turned in one solid performance in helping to beat Box Elder That win, coupled with Roys loss, gave the Falcons the 1984 Region One title and an automatic seeding in the eight-teastate tournament. Parry pitched seven innings and allowed only two hits while striking out 10 batters along the way. Defensively Peterson had one of his batter games of his career at the catcher position. 9-- 1. IF YOU were to drop the name Flint and add Wooden and But as always, Flint isnt making room for the trophy yet. He sincerely feels that this will be the first year in many that he isnt quite sure whether other schools will put certain people which in the long run would create problems for him. THE FALCONS, one of the top clubs in state again this year having won their first ever BYU Invitational last weekend, will rely on several regulars to for sure come through. Kids like Ricky Smith in the 400, 200, 00 and mile relay will be expected to come through as will James Moore in the pole vault. 1 CLEARFIELD also has to be pleased with the emergence of Danny Richardson. Slowly but confidently he has come on to become one of the Falcons top sluggers. In both of Clearfields games last week, he belted out three hits a game. Hes been the leading hitter in the last three games for us, said Hicks. Also coming on has been sophomore Page Higgins, who may outright be the fastest athlete tin the club. ALL OF these talents, plus others like Greg Folk, Phil Peterson and others, hopefully will com- bine to give Clearfield some strength in the baseball tournament. In years past the Falcons, once they got to either Ken Price Park in Murray or Derks Field in Salt Lake, have been a fairly successful playoff team. Its a whole new season down there, said Hicks, And weve always seemed to rise to the occasion down there. I think some of our best performances in the history of baseball here have come from play in the state tournament. Ive really been happy with our performances at the tournament." TAYLORSVILLE might be considered as one of the top baseball clubs in the state right now. They were to open their playoff action against Davis on Monday at noon. Out of the playoff picture for the first time in many years is the Hill-creteam from Region Two. Outside Parry on the mound, Hicks will plan to use Greg Folk in st short relief and either Danny Richardson or Ryan Fisher in long .relief situations. Either Phil Peterson or Greg Folk will go on the mound Wednesday. DOING THE catching responsibilities will be David Peterson, at first will be Fisher, at second is Troy VanBuren, at short will be either Folk or Parry and either Troy Markham or Richardson at third. The outfield has Mike Call in left, Phil Peterson in center and Higgins in right. Expect either Mark Adams or Eric West to enter the game as designated hitters first. lin. Jeff Parry and Gerahard Stracke in the long jump will also have to put valuable points on the board. HAL SCHOFIELD should be a favorite in Region One in the high jump, even though he hasnt been able to defend his early supremacy he established earlier in the year. Im just plain confident that Hal is going to come through, said Flint. Todd Ferguson could move in and get some more points in the pole vault and both Larry Johnson and Ray Dixon have to do well in the hurdle races. Jeff Parry will hopefully long jump for Clearfield. Craig Carter shouldnt have Shaw Hopes Darts Have Enough To Nip Vikings Mike Shaw KAYSVILLE says it could take as much as 225 points to win the Region Four mens track and field title this Thursday and Friday at East High. He just hopes that his troops have what it takes to get that many. THERES NO question that itll be between us and Viewmont, said Shaw, Itll be a two-tearace all the way. The others will come to just soak up some sun. Im positive that the team that wins will get over 200 points, in fact both us and the Vikings could finish with over 200. As Ive taken a look at past performance s , I d have with View-moto rate us as dead-eve- n right now, both of us having the potential to score 210 points. Layton should be able to come away with a ton of points in both the high and low hurdles, especially with Terry Kealamakia, Tom Kidd and Darrell Martin running in them. Kealamakia has the school record in the 300 IM race and hell be battling Roys Larry Helms all the way. In the BYU event last come from Dave Shupe weekend he finished fifth in a strong field. Terry will also run the open 200 meters race and will be a member of the 440 relay. MARTIN WILL be a strong candidate in the 1 10 hurdles at region.
