If Clearfield is better than that, which Folk and his teammates believe they are, then the only thing preventing them from proving it is time. The season is going to be more than half over when the Falcons host Layton this Friday night in an annual homecoming festivity. TIME isnt on our side, said Folk, "Weve got to turn it around quickly. Clearfield led after the first half of the Roy game but couldnt deny two Royal second-hal- f touchdowns as Fred Thompson s crew won their first league game in two years. Last in Region One. year Roy went 6-- 0-- 2 5 WAS a pretty stingy Clearfield defense that held Roy to just two points in the first half, a defense that has helped Clearfield have the halftime lead in all but one game played this year. But giving up 15 points isnt all the bad, only when you can score 14 yourself. It was Clearfields inconsistency on offense that prevented them from winning. Coach Brent Hancock said it himself, "Our inconsistency wore us out. 1 T IT WAS a player named Craig Carter that gave the Falcons their only bright hope on offense. The helped overcome some costly second half penalties and turnovers for as long as he could. For the evening he gained well over 100 yards (the third time hes done that this year) and scored both of Clearfields touchdowns. Utah sportswriters football prep poll 4-- A 1. ONE OF those feelings was a false sense of security and the other was the question, are we really this good? "Obviously it was the false sense of security but not so much because of our ability to move the football, but because of the lack of concentration which resulted in the number of penalties we got, said Wood of his teams 4 defeat in Pleasant View to the Weber Warriors. 22-1- OUR MOMENTUM kept BUT THE penalties took away our momentum, cut and dried. "But you cant coach penalties out of the game. If you overemphasize them, you take away the kids enthusiasm and desire to hit people. Theres the little things the kids have got to concentrate on to get rid of them and then the referees have got to let us play the game too. get- ting thrown right back in our face," said Wood about the game, "Wed be looking at 1st and 10or2ndand5 after a good run or pass but the penalty put us in 1st and 15 or 2nd and 20 situations. "We ran over 70 offensive plays for the night and that should be scoring us 30 points in high school. And you know something, our Murray is throwing the ball. I have no qualms there, said the coach. THE LAYTON defense stood their ground on Friday night. "It was two big plays that beat us," said Wood, "But our kids are capable of stopping those big plays. We cant hang our heads, Weber got only eight first downs. For the night, Stevens ended up getting another fumble recovery, Dustin Parry played a consistent game on the defensive line as he WEBER CAME back to score two touchdowns of their own in the second quarter, two touchdown passes from Burhley to Dave Hall. When you combine them with the safety Weber got when they blocked a Brimhall punt out of the end lead zone, it was enough fora at half time. It was basically a game until with one minute to play, the Warriors scored an insurance touchdown. LAYTON AGAIN got solid efforts on the offense from Lovelace and William Reid who consis 15-1- 4 combined with others for three quarterback sacks, Craig Phelts one-poi- quite loosley. The Lancers were alive and kicking in the opening minutes against Weber. Sonny Morokot played with fire in his eyes from one of the linebacker slots and Darrell Grey, despite allowing a touchdown, came up with a vicious hit that caused a fumble late in the game. Just one play later, it was T roy Murray connecting with tight end Rex Brimhall over the middle on a 28 yard touchdown By TOM HARALDSEN Clipper Sports Editor - BOUNTIFUL Lets admit it, Bountiful quarterback Joey Covey doesnt throw like former BYU great Steve Young. But he sure can run like him. And against East Friday night, the Braves showed they have a whole backfield of talented pass. IN LAYTONS second defensive series, both Wayne Johnson and John Bryant sparked a charge that had Weber wondering. Finally it was Craig Stevens who recovered a Weber fumble on the Weber 30 yard line. Thirteen plays later, it was Murray going over the goal line from one yard out. His pass to Richard Lovelace was good for a conversion and Layton runners. COVEY, along with running backs Sid Smith and Dusty Jacobs, rushed for 349 yards, as the Braves bombed East 28-- during a regionopening, homecoming, freezing victory. The game never seemed to be in doubt, as Covey scored on the third Bountiful play from scrimmage, and the East side of the scoreboard, part of which doesnt work anyway, never had to be turned on. 0 nt JOE WOOD turning things around. Bountifuls ground attack was awesome. Covey scored on runs of 47, 8 and 32 yards, with Smith adding a TD on a nifty 24 yard jaunt. Meanwhile, the Braves were letting East pile up the yardage between the 20s but wouldnt let them penetrate further. Bountiful is now under new coach Larry Wall, while East fell to COVEY GAVE an indication early as to what East was going to get. On the Braves third offensive play from the East 47, Covey faded back to pass, then, seeing no one open, scrambled to the right and ran for a score. Matt Bombard's PAT made it 0 just 3:17 into the 3-- 1 3. 7-- game. Bountiful marched 62 yards in 12 plays on its second drive. With the exception of one incomplete pass, the entire drive was on the ground. Falcons, Lancers try for victory continued Craig Carter has been their only hope but Coach Brent Hancock will have to get more from other people. LAYTONS rebound attempt over the first week will be an attempt to cut down on penalties. They simply had too many in their loss to Weber. The Lancer have found an answer to their quarterback situation with sophomore Troy Murray and the two junior running backs, William Reid and Richard Lovelace are as quick and deceptive running backs as there are in the area. AS I look a this league, said Wood, "I honestly believe we could have the most explosive offense among the six teams. But we just cant kill ourselves like we did against Weber. Wood believes 21 points will win most games and he believes his offense is very capable of putting that many points on the board. CLEARFIELD is perhaps capable of that too, but clearly hasnt shown it yet. The Falcons have a bunch of new faces in their line-uthat are just beginning to learn their roles. "We have a goal at Layton, continued Wood, To beat our cross-tow- n rival. We want that win bad. But we wont win unless we care about each other. 22-1- 4 p Beauty consultant here to explain the difference in cosmetics.
