But really, theres nothing simplistic about what Todd and Tyler have accomplished the past couple ITS 1 1 of years. L ' RECENTLY these two Kaysvil-l- e youth won the Utah State Elks Club Hoop Shoot, which in essence brings to surface the best freethrow shooters among three and age groups, 8 and 9, 10 and 12 and 13 year olds. The national champions will have their name placed in the National Basketball Hall of Fame. Both Todd and Tyler won the Davis County shoot out on Jan. 19 with over 150 kids participating. They won next in the state semifinals at Ogden on Feb. 19 and that led to their victory in Orem on March 2. THE ELKS Club Hoop Shoot involves some 7,000,000 boys and girls around the nation each year. Todd won the state championship two years ago and took second in Las Vegas. He loves the sport of basketball, having played on two league teams this winter and is presently a member of the 13 and under AAU team. Besides basketball though, Todd was a quarter- back for his football squad and a pitcher and shortstop for his baseball team. In four years his baseball teammates and he have lost only three games and every year theyve won the championship. In soccer he was the leading scorer on a team that went last season. 11-- 0 TYLER IS the defending state champion in the 8 and 9 year old category, making 24 or 25 freethrows in last years state championship finale. At Las Vegas he finished second to the son of Doug Collins, the former Philadelphia 76ers star. In the state competition last winter he made 19 straight shots to win by one freethrow. Tyler also plays quarterback for his football team, is a member of the 11 and under AAU basketball team, and plays shortstop and pitcher for his baseball team. BOTH TYLER and Todd, who are both 3.6 gpa students in the classroom, workout one hour a day for six days a week. They'll shoot as many as 100 freethrows a day and during most of the year will play three days a week at 6 a.m. 1 dont push them, said Mr. Heath. THE FALCON basketball team, who put on a fine second half defensive show, slowed down the Box Elder Bees last Friday night in Brigham City and won going away, 73-6- It was the second straight year in which Clearfield has come from behind at Box Elder to win and some great defense in the second halves did it both times. THE BEES were shooting a hot in the first half and as a 6 after one result were leading quarter and 7 at the half. But Craig Hansens kids played a little smarter defense in the second half which caused Box Elders shooting for percentage to dip to the last two quarters. It was a desire on the part of the kids to continue to play good defense that was the key. We tried a few things until the right one came along, said Hansen. 22-1- 39-2- nt CLEARFIELD didnt catch Box Elder all at once though. Mark Adams had 12 points, Mike Call finished with six, Greg Boykin had 10, Darrell Hicks had 12 and Lee Parry added 10. 18-- 3 BUT LATER on, as Roy adjusted and went to a half court trap, it cooled our tempo way down. People may have been wondering what was happening to us, but we still had a 15 point lead which was important.
