Show DAVIS REFLEX JOURNAL. MARCH 13, 1985 sports Heath Brothers Whip Em All On Bntheye By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports KAYSVILLE Around David and Susan Heaths home in Kays-villthe game of basketball carries a little more weight than most. e, ITS BECAUSE of their two sons, Todd age and Tyler age 9, who do something extremely well with a basketball, something as simple as shooting freethrows. But really, theres nothing simplistic about what Todd and Tyler have accomplished the past couple 1 1 of years. RECENTLY these two Kaysvil-l- e youth won the Utah State Elks Club Hoop Shoot, which in ess- ence brings to surface the best freethrow shooters among three age groups, 8 and 9, 10 and 1 and 12 and 13 year olds. Todd and Tyler won in the state finals on March 2 in Orem. They 1 Todd and Tyler Heath recently captured the state titles in the Elks Club Hoop Shoot Contest. will now take their parents with them and head to Las Vegas, Nev. for regional competition on March 23. They will compete against the state champions from California, Hawaii, Nevada and Arizona. IF SUCCESSFUL in finishing first in Las Vegas, then its off to Indianapolis on April 27. The national champions will have their name placed in the National Basketball Hall of Fame. Both Todd and Tyler won the Davis County shoot out on Jan. 19 with over 150 kids participating. They won next in the state semifinals at Ogden on Feb. 19 and that led to their victory in Orem on March 2. THE ELKS Club Hoop Shoot involves some 7,000,000 boys and girls around the nation each year. Todd won the state championship two years ago and took second in Las Vegas. He loves the sport of basketball, having played on two league teams this winter and is presently a member of the 13 and under AAU team. Besides basketball though, Todd was a quarterback for his football squad and a pitcher and shortstop for his baseball team. In four years his baseball teammates and he have lost only three games and every year theyve won the championship. In soccer he was the leading scorer on a team that went 11-- 0 last season. TYLER IS the defending state champion in the 8 and 9 year old category, making 24 or 25 freethrows in last years state championship finale. At Las Vegas he finished second to the son of Doug Collins, the former Philadelphia 76ers star. In the state competition last winter he made 19 straight shots to win by one freethrow. Tyler also plays quarterback for his football team, is a member of the 11 and under AAU basketball team, and plays shortstop and pitcher for his baseball team. BOTH TYLER and Todd, who are both 3.6 gpa students in the classroom, workout one hour a day for six days a week. Theyll shoot as many as 100 freethrows a day and during most of the year will play three days a week at 6 a.m. I dont push them, said Mr. Heath. They dont go in the morning unless they come and wake me up. WERE tickled with their cess, continued Mr. Heath, At least it gets my wife and I a trip to Las Vegas with the kjds each year. We just love toisee1 them excell. NEXT YEAR the Heaths will have another participant come in as their eight year old daughter becomes eligible for competition. Layton Blows Out Royals In Finale By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports Before Fridays 60-4- 0 whitewashing of Roy High, Doug Moon said the only thing hed like to see before the end of the season was to witness his club play four straight quarters of LAYTON -- - bas-ketb- playing. theyre capable of that did witness the Roy blowout will agree that the Lancers played near brilliant for at least one quarter but stunk it up in others. It was their best and their worst again in one outing. BUT THE borrom line is winning and Layton has done more of that than anything this winter. The Roy kill left them at 4 in Region One, tied for Clearfield for second place. Layton and Clearfield were to have played off on Tuesday of this week to decide which one of them would represent Region One as the second and third place teams. 6-- WEVE PLAYED super during an eight minute stretch but we can't seem to put an entire game together, said Moon. Well, on Friday night the Layton coach didnt get his wish but those Defense Paves Way For Win Over Bees LAYTON BLEW out to an 18-- 1 lead at one point and were up 18-- 3 at the end of the first quarter last Friday. Everything was falling into place, said Moon. Everyone was doing their job. We were controlling the boards, playing great defense both inside and outside and scoring when we had the chance. It was the best quarter these kids have played all year. BUT LATER on, as Roy By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports CLEARFIELD -- - The names Clearfield and defense usually go hand in hand and in 1985 its much of the same thing. THE BEES were shooting a hot in the First half and as a 6 after one result were leading quarter and 7 at the half. But Craig Hansens kids played a little smarter defense in the second half which caused Box Elders shooting for percentage to dip to the last two quarters. It was a desire on the part of the kids to continue to play good defense that was the key. We tried a few things until the right one came along, said Hansen. 22-1- 39-2- CLEARFIELD didnt catch Box Elder all at once though. They made a couple of serious runs at the Bees in the third quarter but were still down after three full quarters. But after a trapping de56-4- 9 ad- justed and went to a half court trap, it cooled our tempo way down. People may have been wondering what was happening to us, but we still had a 15 point lead which was important. We learned a lot in the Roy game and we will work on some things before the tournament gets 4-- H here. LAYTON GOT six wins in ten tries and Moon was proud of the progress his team has made. These kids dont play the mental aspect of the game real well but they work hard. Its fun watching kids that I didnt think would play much, come around and play exceptionally well. I had no idea wed tie for second in this league because we came into this year with only one guy who had any real experience. It makes seasons like this one fun for all of us, all except for the length of the season. gals enter their tournament this week and Davis will be considered a darkhorse favorite.
