JUNIOR, honor roll, Camille Animal Changes ftk Humanity, as its numbers increase, continues to make irrevocable changes in the habitats, feeding habits, and even the reproductive patterns of earths animal population. Many, through ignorance or contempt, shirk their responsibilities to these animals. Many persist in their belief that they give an animal a chance by dropping it near farm land, that a sick or injured pet can usually heal itself, that animals can cope with extreme temperatures and perverse abuses. The fact is that millions of animals, the ones that were bred to be loyal, gentle and dependent, die slow, painful deaths each year from starvation, exposure and infection. ."tr THERE ARE always people who lack the sensitivity to treat their pets well, but there are many more who would be remark- V 1 J s. i' ft f'l ft ii tl n ff s-- ably compassionate in their treatment of animals if they were educated in the needs of their pets. Please, in this season that makes us aware of the qualities of loving and sharing, consider educating yourself and others. The realities arent always pleasant, but they can be dealt with. Realize that if you allow your pet to breed you become responsible for the births of thousands and the unpleasant deaths of most of them. Understand that if you get a pet you are accountable for the length and quality of its life. If you must choose between abandoning a pet or releasing it to an animal shelter, humane organization is the best choice now and in the long run. If you would like to give a pet for Christmas, try giving a stuffed toy substitute, choosing the real pet after the stampede of relatives and high living subsides. THERE ARE people in our area who have put much more than time and money into animal resue. Their reward is to know that they have helped the truly helpless, housed the abandoned, and made some wonderful matches of people and pets. While you're surrounded with the warmth of Christmas, please remember those who are cold, hungry, frightened and suffering; the ones who have no choice. Make a difference in your household or neighborhood by contacting the Humane Society or a local vet about altering your pet. If you have money, food or skills to share contact any area organization. Share your love and concern - give the sort of gift that will keep you warm inside and out.
