Show F alarms s Wiimins Cam Be Addictim gers. The Falcons beat By KEITH DUNCAN Bountiful club to open the season and then destroyed Woods Cross by a bundle. Journal Sports - There's alCLEARFIELD ways a couple of things that win- THIS YEAR the Falcons have a ning can take care of. FIRST OFF, its got to be the best way to wipe out the memories of horrible, losing season. a Second, winning is addicting and has better than good chances of carrying over into another year. Someday you ought to chat with Craig Hansen at Clearfield High and see if he agrees to the above. You can bet he does. WHAT happened Well it's just like 1 said. All the winning of '83-8- 4 wiped out the memories ofa league season. Noone even cares to remember so I'll bury it too. But '83-8- 4 was a year to remember if you're a basketball fan in Clearfield. The Falcons got better with each game and despite the fact that they didn't win the region, they went on to have one of the finest tournaments in this school's rich basketball history. in '82-83- a solid ? couple of returning lettermen back but what makes them appear so poised and ready is their depth. There are two centers, three forwards and four guards all capable of getting the job done. Troy Markham is one starter at forward, rather small forward. Troy played a lot of basketball during junior high at the bigger positions but once he reached high school, he quit growing. So for most of his sophomore and junior years he played guard. BUT THIS year Hansen has him at small forward which hasnt been a bad move with Eric West and Greg Boykin, two bigger guys getting the job done inside. Markham has an accurate outside shot that eventually lures one of the opponent's bigger guys away from the basket. Holding down one of the guard positions and holding it down well t, is Mike Call. At less than Call makes up for his lack of size with aggressive play. In the Woods Cross game he created headache after headache for the Wildcats and held the Wildcats best player to almost nothing. six-foo- HANSEN led last year's crew to victories in their first two tournament games, including a memorable. but slim victory over Bingham High. That set the stage for a showdown with the Brighton Bengals. a game Hansen's kids played their hearts out. Not once were the Bengals let off the hook jnd Duke Reid's team hadn't really won till the final buzzer sounded. After the high scoring clash. Brighton went their way and won the state championsemi-fin- al Bengal-Falco- n nt COACHES love guys like Call, they're winners. He only got four points in that Woods Cross game, but it wasnt the points he got that were important. Every team needs guys who sacrifice like him, said Coach Hansen. Eric West, one of last year's eventual starters and a guy with tremendous leaping ability, is back still coming along with some fine g skills. He's not that big, but he plays much bigger than he is. All can say is that Greg is going to be a fine player before this season is over," said Hansen. shot-blockin- 1 again. WEST STANDS over six-foand will play inside at one of the forward positions. Hansen says that West will get better with each game that passes, especially in the rebounding area where Clearfield needs him the most. Darrell Hicks, a junior, is the other starting guard. ONE OF the first reserves off the bench is senior Mark Adams. No one keeps their head and uses poise like this kid does. Adams came in during the second half of the Ogden game to keep Clearfield in the game just as Ogden was beginning to pull away. He tanked five straight points during one stretch to keep things alive. HICKS, the son of Clearfield coach Ken Hicks, has the makings to become one of the outstanding athletes in the region if not this yekjxthen next. He has the quickness and size to give Hansen exactly what he needs in a bigger guard. Mike Gardnerof Davis High said after scouting the Falcons in a preseason game, That Hicks kid is going somewhere. I think hell develop into a great basketball KENNY ASHBY came off the bench in both of Clearfield's first their teams, he'd be starting every week. With the exception of Heslop shooting the daylights out of the basket, we've done a pretty good job elsewhere. Our offense and freethrow shooting still has a way to go but we are playing well together. It's our rebounding and defense that has been the best, but we've got to improve in other areas too," said Hansen. p :v '. y ' vAjY-- ' A $A--. AS player." 4yyv , S' ' ' ' L 'ft v, A x.j ,;y i. GREG BOYKIN is one of the Clearfield student's favorites. He's coming back at the center spot this season to close out his Clearfield High career. At 4 Boykin has springs in his legs and having only played basketball since the ninth grade, this kid simply scares the heck out of smaller teams because he played like 6-- hes 6-- 8. ONCE BOYKIN found himself last season, the Falcons really began to fly high. During a three game stretch a year ago he poured in a 20-poi- nt points average, including 28 in one game. His defense is ship while Clearfield hung on and won again in consolation. When the smoke had cleared, Clearfield had third place all to themselves which was the highest finish any boys basketball team had achieved from Clearfield since the state championship year of 1967. AND THE words of Clearfield principal, Lawrence Cook, still ring clear. He said in the locker room afterwards, For you guys coming back next year, let's do it again. That may not have been just a passing remark, because the '84-8- 5 group has taken Cook serious and could very well find themselves back in the playoff hunt. HANSEN HAS another fine team returning this season and even though folks are picking Bonneville to win it all in Region One, all I've got to say is look out for them , Falcons. As of Monday this week, Clearfield had notched a couple of imand pressive wins in been humbled once by Mark Heslop and the Ogden Ti- - The third place finish of last year's Falcon basketball team will be hard to match, but kids these, Troy Markham, Lee Parry, Mark Adams and Greg Boykin are kids capable of pre-seas- ld manhandling the challenge. Lloyd, Taylor To Set Nets Afire ; teams favor. own ' CASEY HAS that ability to nail seven or eight shots in a row. If ; clubs try to leave him alone, hes going to hurt them. If teams sit in a ' ?r zone, he has the ability to be a :r game-breakwith his outside shot. I couldn't ask for a better kid to coach, he does everything 1 ask of him," said Gardner. v er ANOTHER positive point about Lloyd is his war experience. He's been through plenty of high school sports action, both the good and mobad, both the tention-fille- d moments and the ments. Down the stretch when easy-goin- g Davis is looking for someone to carry them through the nerve-- : clinching racking and play-of- f times, theyll be looking for Lloyd. Count on it. Mike Taylor lettered as a sophomore, seeing oddles of playing time his first year in a Dart uniform. AND HES back again, a little stronger, a little more confident and a little more dangerous for the opponents. Taylor will be called upon to play inside much more than probably what he is used to. Thats because the same old story still exists - the Darts still lack the size they wished they had. At 6-- 2, -- BEING THE kind of basketball player he is, Taylor has the ability to draw fouls and fake em out inside. And nobody can put down this guys outside shot, its on target most of the time. We hope that Casey and Mike will compliment each other. Were going to play Mike more inside this year at the post and have Casey on the outside and hope teams will sag inside on Mike thus leaving Casey open to drill it from the outside. And if they pressure Casey, we hope it will open up some avenues for Mike, like THEREs NO question that Mike is a basketball player. I like to think of his potential in having a great basketball future. Perhaps Mikes only setback compared to and that of his two basketball brothers that Ive coached, is that he doesnt All-Sta- that they have the had. But Mike is still growing and maturing and 1 think by the time he is a senior, hell be a real quality high school basketball player. ss . Youll hear a lpt about Taylor and Lloyd as the season goes on but as mentioned earlier, itll take at least five guys to get the job done of qualifying for a tournament berth. THE THIRD returning letterman is a senior, David Kinard. Along with Lloyd hes been elected as one of the team captains. At hes a hustling, defensive specialist who is quick and will quarterback the offense. Gardner likes his exierience and feels confident that Kinard can run the offensive picture. 5-- REGARDLESS of size, were going to have Kinard guard the opponents best offensive player. His quickness and ability to anticipate make him a quality defensive star, said Gardner. Brent Meier is the fourth returning letterman and comes back this junior guard. year as a 5-- HES shooter, said Gardner with emphasis. Casey is our streak shooter, but Brent is our best shooter. We like his range and his jump shot. Another thing that helps him is his quickness. Itll be those four players that comes back as a senior. He hasnt seen much if any varsity action. Gardner wants to groom and develop Danny for Januarys league a lot of promise and will develop into good basketball players, said Gardner. GARDNER knew from the very beginning that his clubs preseason schedule was as tough as any around. So far this team has already played Judge, one otf the teams in the state; Ogden, top another quality team and finally Cottonwood, a power to reckon with this year in In each and every one of those games, the Darts were in it for the victory. Against Ogden, the Darts led through part of the game and against Cottonwood they blew a lead with less than two minutes to play. WE WILL jell together and eventually we will be a good team. I believe we'll be a fun team to watch, mainly because of these play. KEITH Hunsaker is a 2 senior who is rough and physical who will see plenty of playing time this year. Gardner says as soon as he irons out his offensive game, hell be a great asset. Andy Nef at 3 will be the clubs biggest player inside as far as physical play goes. Hes a solid and has to get better as the season moves along. 6-- 3-- A 3-- A 6-- 4-- from Germany this I year is Scott Moon who is at really feel that before the season is over hell be a great asset to us.
