Show V ! f, j t Darts never quite By KEITH DUNCAN Reflex-Journ- It was just another good ole thrashing as the Darts finally beat Woods Cross They rolled up 341 yards rushing on 48 carries and amassed 402 yards total otfense. Blake Hart led the carries. charge as he gained 124 yards on the ground in just Sports al KAYSVILLE Its scary to think what might happen if the Davis Dart football team got perfect one week. 1 35-1- COACH JIM Dickson described his team's coping with nonperfection. I wish people could see these kids grade themselves on film, especially the grading of the Ben Lomond game. We had a big score there and many people would take that to mean great play all the way through. CARD HELD out his hand like a limp dogs paw and muttered something under his breath. Gardner snapped back at him to accept his congratulations and even though Card tried, it wasnt what Gardner was looking for. Later Gardner put the experience in words. THE WOODS Cross game was the best yet but we still haand referees have always found themselves to get in the way. Card isnt concerned with getting 150 to 200 yards per game, his main emphasis is winning as a team. Id much rather have the team win than see me get a bunch of yards. We dont have any superstars here, we win as a team. vent arrived yet. Penalties, turnovers Dickson. DONT TAKE me wrong, continued Dickson, Were never satisfied, but were happy at the same time. Were happy we won but not satisifed that we gave up seven turnovers and lost five of them or lost 132 yards in penalities. We had 90 yards in penalities in the first half alone. This striving for perfection thing starts with the coaches first. TRUTHFULLY, Card did have a great game. He rushed for 77 yards and averaged 6.8 yards per carry. He intercepted a pass and ran it back 24 yards for a touchdown and nearly had a kick-of- f return for a touchdown had it not been for a referee that got in his way. He was also terrific from his middle linebacker position. SEPTEMBER AND BELIEVE me, those guys will practice till they're blue until it happens the way they want it. Chris Card commented, I havent been satisfied all year. BUT ALL of a sudden you get them together and get them being critical of themselves like someone missing a block, or two guys not controlling a gap and allow ing a touchdown or someone not being in man cover and allowing a big play to happen. All of a sudden they start seeing themselves and forget the big write up in the paper that tells then how great they were, said ITS AMAZING, simply amazing. Our kids just wont accept mediocrity. Of course we as coaches wont allow them to., I thought Chris Card played a super game against the Cats but he knows he is capable of doing better. I guess the thing that is really exceptional, is that our kids cant get too excited when they know they could cut down on penalties, get a few more first downs or tackle a little harder, even if they are up by more than three touchdowns. Maybe if it were another school, the kids would be going ape with a 23 point lead heading into the fourth quarter, said Gardner. REFLEX-JOURNA- THE DARTS went irto the locker room leading 28 6, which looked like a tromp. But the Darts only had three first downs in the first half and 90 yards worth of penalties. We harped on that, said Dickson who was sure the kids got the point despite being up by three touchdowns. At Davis the Darts trademark in football is to get the football and march as far as it takes to get a touchdown. That keeps the defense off the field which is exastly what they want. nt 2 reflex-journ- 1 ON OFFENSE, Davis intercepted six passes and they got to the Woods Cross quarterback on four occasions. win, the Darts still were not happy, But despite the at least. totally WHO KNOWS? It just might happen the way they try so hard. Late in the third quarter as the Dart coaches were taking out the build-u- p over Woods Cross High seasoned players from School, it was assistant coach Mike Gardner who walked over to one of his prize running backs, Chris Card and extended his hand in congratulations. DAVIS Jimmy, 1 shouldnt have called that, were the words from Gardner. But just moments later Dickson was turning to Gardner and telling him of a smiliar bad call that he shouldnt have made. We as coaches make mistakes and we want to always get better, said Dickson. 49-2- 7. BLAKE HART commented that he wasnt content because most of Davis first half points came from Woods Cross turnovers rather than their own controlled offensive punch. Coach Gardner told us we had to get the double wing offense going that it was a shame to get just three first downs in one half. Those words got me motivated, said Hart who was a terror in the second half. ON FRIDAY against Woods Cross, Gardner made a bad call offensively and told Dickson so. You know, that was a bad call al 25, 1985 Darts Top-ranke- d. spoil Wildcats homecoming game By GARY R. We expect a real tough game from Bountiful, but well be ready for them, said Davis Coach Jim Cross Dickson as the Davis-Wood- s poll. There were a lot of mistakes in Cross game Frithe Davis-Wood- s day night -- - a dozen of them between the two teams. Davis, for example, intercepted six Wildcat aerials which does one of two things - puts Davis in good scoring position or stops a Wildcat threat. And it did both. -- THREE TIMES Woods Cross scoring drives were halted inside the 25, one being a Dart interception in the end zone. Both teams could have, and should have scored even more points than they did. But thats not to take away from the battle on the field. Both teams had their moments of glory on offense and lapses on defense. NOT ONLY did the Darts strike first after the recovered fumble, they were on the scoreboard again just a few minutes later when Kurt Mounteer intercepted a pass and returned it to the Davis 32. Four plays later Mounteer waltzed into pay dirt from the 17. Woods Cross scored its first TD and narrowed the margin to after returning a Davis punt to the 33. There was a pass interference against Davis and Dave Larson lofted a pass to Taisi Avei who ran to the 15. From here, Larson kept the ball and skirted left end for a touchdown.
