THERE IS NO question that the Hawks are on a roll right now. First they shutout Bountiful 20-then blistered Region One champion Box Elder, 4 and last week destroyed Olympus 25-Wow, the kids have been playing extraordinarily well right now, said Doug Berry of Alta, I just hope like heck it can continue one more game. For two years in a row, the Hawks have been successful in thwarting the Darts. Two years ago they knocked Ward Sawleys crew out of the playoffs, in winning Last season it Under Cullimores regime, the Darts also won the state football title in 1974 over Bingham High. By KEITH DUNCAN 4-- A Journal Sports Chris Stevenson makes a crushing blow as the Davis defense held Hillcrest scoreless in the second half. With Utahs state football KAYSVILLE championship on the line, its not unusual to find the Davis Darts battling for it once again. (7-4- OVER THE years, the Darts have found success unlimited on the state level. Gerald Purdy of course had a lot to do with championship games himself, leading the; Darts from 1960 to 1968. During those years he j led his teams to 3 title games. His 1965 club; : captured the state title. ITS TRITE to repeat this, but its always, been taking one game at a time. And its also, all year, doing the same ole things youve done :: to make you successful. B-B- all BUT THIS year is a whole lot different, said Coach Berry of Alta, Especially for us since weve never been in a state championship before. Davis is a little different team this year, in terms of their explosiveness on the ground as well as in the air. That (Steve) Sargent kid is an excellent thrower. There was a complete difference between last Friday and the week before when he didnt play. The execution and leadership he adds to the offensive unit, makes quite a difference. AND OF course now weve got to prepare for both their double wing and their passing game. Berry, who assisted for a few years at Jordan High School when Jay Cullimore was the head coach at Davis, says he has the utmost respect for the Davis High program. Fve always had that respect, even when I played in high school against them. Im just happy to be playing them for the state championship. THE HAWK team of 1983, according to their coach, has put forth more work in summer weight training and other things than any group Ive had. I think that has a lot to do with the fact that a lot of people told them they werent going to be that good this year because of the quality and quantity of kids that graduated last year. Of course it took them awhile to get going, said Berry, But the defense is as good or better than what it was a year ago. THE HAWKS did have a tough time in the beginning, losing their first two games to both Jordan and Granger. But the defense, outside of allowing Hillcrest 26 points during a league game, has been very consistent through the entire year. "Its been a surprising year, said Berry. I thought we could be pretty good but never in my wildest dreams did I think wed end up in the state championship game. I THINK there are a lot of people who are upset that its not Hillcrest and Olympus in the state finals, all except the fans at Alta and Davis. And for me, thats all that matters right now, chuckled Berry. Weve had luck in the past stopping Davis and I hope it comes again. I've had a lot of coaches call me and ask how we have stopped But we dont do anything their double-windifferent. We study their films like everyone else. I dont know what its been, maybe just the breaks weve been getting the past couple of years against them. Weve kept them in the hole and capitalized on their mistakes, he said. THIS WILL be the first time for Ward Saw-lejust like Altas Berry, in which as a head coach they will be leading a team into the finals. Sawley has been to state championships as an assistant, in fact five times underlay Cullimore. He also assited in Clearfield Highs state basketball championship in 1967. I've been to enough final games to know that the cream of the crop is there. When two great teams get together, its very, very tough. One mistake, just one, can cost you the Ask Pleasant Grove about that. Theyd finals had it not been for be playing in the one fumbled punt, said Sawley in anticipation I FEEL that the best two teams are in the finals, contrary to what others might feel. I felt that Alta had the power to beat Olympus and they did. And I felt we could beat Hillcrest too. Its come down to the two best teams, he said. g. y, ball-gam- e. 3-- A Underway At Clearfield And the Huskies had some brusing hits of their own. Here Smith gets rammed by Hillcrest lineman, enough to jar the ball loose. The Clearfield Recreation Department still has some openings on its mens B, mens Hard To Forget six-fo- and under and women's basketball leagues. Team registrations will be accepted at the Clearfield Swim Pool located at 934 S. 1000 E., Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. now until the leagues are full. ALL LEAGUES will be played on Monday evenings at North Davis Junior High School or Clearfield High - hope they never forget what happened out there last Friday. They won more than just a football game. Mark Miller, who scored the winning touchdown, stated, One night after practice last week, (Steve) Sargent and I rode home together one night and we just felt he had a chance. Maybe that thinking is what helped us stay alive in that final drive of ours. SEAN KILGROW, a senior lineman and also the studentbody president, noted, Ever since my brother, Scott, participated on the 1974 state championship team here at Davis, Ive always wondered what it would be like. This week well get our chance to find out. Said Jeff Hamer afterwards, I knew it was going to take a little luck and a lot of hard work to come back on a good football team like Hillcrest. Ill neverforget that game as long as I live. THE TEAMS center, Curt Cottrell, stated, We beat a darn good football team. Their defensive line was super and basically a quality football team all the way around. Its been a goal of ours to win a state title since we were freshman, said Greg McNabb, When we went undefeated as sophomores, the possibility seemed even greater. As juniors it was Alta who knocked us out and its only fitting that it should be Alta that we are playing for the state title as seniors. COACH DICKSON further commented, We made our own breaks. No. 44 could have scored, Woodward could have dropped some of those passes or Sargent could have thrown a real bad pass. But we did what we had to do by ourselves because Hillcrest wasnt giving up the football on mistakes. Assistant coach, SALT LAKE CITY Bruce Bitner, made a fitting comment after Davis thrilling 8 semi-finvictory over Hillcrest last Friday when he said, Its games like that, that turn kids into young men almost instantly. And thats what weve got around here, some mature young men. 21-1- al BITNER described it right. There were just too many times, in fact dozens, that the Darts could have turned the towel in and walked away, allowing the favored Hillcrest team to excell into the state championship. But it never happened that way, its Davis meeting Alta and not the Huskies. Said Jim Dickson, another assistant, The kids werent thinking about being in the state finals, but they were believing they had a chance. WARD SAWLEY, the head coach, stated, My compliment to the club is that they tried, and tried and tried and finally succeeded.
