Show WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, NORTH DAVIS LEADER, JULY 30. 1981 Bountiful's Kaysville Chamber: Fun Run Tournament Bv DAVE Bountiful City can stand up and take a bow for the softball tournament they ran oer the 24th weekend. From all indications the players thought it was one of the best run they had been involved in. SURE THERE were some comments for improvement but for a first time effort it was a flight Maxine Harmon should be gi en a lot of credit for the smooth running affair which ran three days. She spent a lot of time over at the Parks making sure everything w as going smoothly . Max was the person that came up with the idea for the tournament in the first place and she deserves much of the credit for the success. LAST YEAR the home run winner hit 34 home runs in the tournament. The four foot fence at the Complex is 285 feet from home plate. This year they played at the new Taylorsville Complex and the winner had five. Their fence is ten feet high and some 320 feet from heme plate. That put the pressure on the big guys to play some defense and try for base hits rather than the long ball . What would have been easy home runs last year turned into ong outs this year. SOFTBALL, SPORTS in general, tends to bring out the worst in some people but the sportsmanship at this Bountiful tournament was great. All the teams wanted to win and were gracious in defeat. THE GROUNDS crew did a fine job of keeping the diamond in playing shape. Brad Christiansen, Joey Tibbitts and Gordon Little were the main people involved with this project. The games themselves wer fun to watch with the teams evenly matched in most cases. Many former high school athletes were involved in the event and they showed the crowds that they can still play the Hunters 11 years old and older: a hunters education class Security State Bank of Kaysville or Barnes Bank in Kaysville during banking hours. Speaking of the Salt Lake tournaments the big one was held over the weekend and believe me it was a different type of game. At the Cottonwood Complex, where they have always held the event, teams from around the country came in loaded up for home runs. SHELL BE the first to admit though that she had help along the w ay. Neil Jenkins, the superintendant of the Parks and Recreation was also involved in the event. He was there bright and early each day to make sure things were right and if he could help in any way. In between games Neil ran the horseshoe competition at City Park and it too was a success. Much of the praise came toward the scorekeepers of the events. These gals spent many hours watching softball and keeping track of the score both in the book and on the scoreboard. Girls like Jill Avery, Jan Avery, Kym Halbash, Kelly Richards, Angie Harwood, Chris Whetton and Kerry Fenwick should be praised for their work. and ribbons will be presented to the winners in each category THE ANMAL Kaysville Hunter Safety Class $2.50 or the day of the race $3.
