Show WEEKLY REFLEX-DAV- IS NEWS JOURNAL, AUGUST 4, 1977 Young Players Sbovy Ibir Stuff At Region Tourney By DAVE WIGHAM Davis Schools: Good Coaches By DAVE WIGHAM Davis County is unique as far as high school football goes, each of the schools has a first-rat- e coach to guide their fortunes. All of these men involved in football are dedicated to improving the game and the young men that they work with. THESE MEN that speak of are Layton's Gary Hansen, Clearfields Jack Hannum, Davis High Coach Jay Cullimore, Viewmont's Monte Jones, Bountifuls Paul Waite and Woods Cross Coach Wally Hawkins. The rookie of the bunch would be Wally Hawkins who 1 brings his Wildcats into their first year of varsity competition this season. Wally has been coaching for several years at Woods Cross so he has his system embedded in his players. Many of his players have gone on to fame at Viewmont High, but now Wally will get to see his players develop at the new school. NEXT IN line would be Viewmonts Monte Jones who is going into his second year as head man for the Vikes. Monte has been a coach a lot longer than two years so he has the experience needed. Experience, or the lack of it, was the key to Viewmont last year. The Vikings played a lot of young players last season who will be back this year, both players and coaches learned from last years experiences and the Vikes should be back on track again this season. BOUNTIFULS Paul Waite has turned the program around in the six years he has been at the Brave helm. Before Paul arrived the Braves were considered a bye on a schedule, but since his arrival the Braves have been to the state playoffs four times. Paul stresses team work and constant dedication to his players, his theory seems to be working. JAY CULLIMORE is entering his eighth year as the mam man at Davis and who can argue with his record. In those years, the Darts have won two state crowns, finished second twice and third and fourth once each. Under Coach Cullimore, the Davis team has been at the state meet all but two years. The Darts were hit hard by graduation but they will be as tough as ever. Layton Highs Gary Hansen has built the Lancer program up since taking over several years ago. The Layton group rarely miss the state playoffs and always send countless numbers of players onto college campuses. The Lancers have more professional and college players from their school than any other in the area. COACH HANSEN is a perfectionist who loves execution. He is also known for his great weight program. Jack Hannum has had the Falcons of Clearfield near the top of the region and state for the past few years. This coach is almost unpredictable on opponents. When a run is obvious he calls for a pass play. An avid cowboy during the summer, Coach Hannum knows the meaning of hard work and dedication and teaches it well to his players. THESE COACHES are flanked by great staffs. All of them will tell you how great their assistants are and true that fact is. But win or lose, these are the men that get the blame. People in the county can be proud of the type of men that are coaching their young players. RegSaw Four Sllow IPStiolhi cause some problems in the By DAVE WIGHAM Region meet. Fourteen Stake winners lead a total of 32 teams into the annual Region 4 slow pitch softball tournament sponsored by the LDS Church this week. BOTH the junior and senior divisions have the 32 teams entered into the tournaments. Games will either be played at the Bountiful City field on 400 North, Rocket Park on Center Street in Bountiful, the Bountiful West Park on 1400 North and 300 West in Bountiful and the Kaysville Park on Main Street in Kaysville. Leading the parade of top senior teams is the defending Region champs from the Centerville 10th Ward. .This team enters the tournament with a perfect league mark of 12-and also the championship of the Centerville Invitational tournament to their credit. THE runnerups from last year, Bountiful Third, are also back in the tournament with a Stake championship to their credit. Perennial tournament powerhouse Bountiful 12th Ward is back to try to get 0 their championship back after losing last year in the quarter finals. Kaysville 15th, is the top team from that area. This team also participated in the Centerville tournament and earned the respect of many of the teams. This team has the power and the fielding to Stake winners include Bountiful 18th, Kaysville 5th, Bountiful 2nd, Orchard 5th, Farmington 5th, Bountiful 19th, Val Verda 5th, Bountiful 11th, Woods Cross 2nd and the Bountiful 14th OTHER club. The Region winner doesnt always turn out to be a first place team. Last year the championship Centerville Tenth Ward came in as the third place team from their stake, and this year there are some very tough teams other than the Stake winners. BOUNTIFUL 45th is an experienced ladened club who could prove troublesome in the tournament. Kaysville 7th is a highly regarded squad. This ward is scheduled to meet the defending champs in the first round game. Another dark horse could be the Centerville 7th Ward, consisting of stars this club has the youth necessary to make their games exciting. NO ONE can predict the outcome or who the winner will be. The top two teams will advance to the Area Tournament August 20. beginning runs The tournament throughout the week with the finals slated for next Wednesday at 9 p.m. at the Bountiful City Park. It was the day for the youth at the Bountiful City golf course last Saturday during n the 4 Golf Tournament of the LDS Church. Multi-Regio- IN THE junior division, or Explorer, the winner ws Curtis Pettengale who will be a senior at Davis High this coming year. Even in the senior division it was a couple of youngsters, George Rackham and Kent Winegar, both of these golfers barely make the minimum age for the seniors. Pettengale had the best score of anyone in any division with a three over par 74. Curtis played steadily throughout the tournament to win the low gross honors. Second in the juniors went to Doug Chadwick with an 82, that was eight shots off of Pettengales winning score to show how well the Davisite was playing. THE low net honors went to Mike Nelson of Bountiful with a score of 71 with his han- dicap. The veterans division winner with a gross score of 80 went to Paul Foster. Second place honors, just one stroke in back of Foster, was Ike Beesley. The low net honors went to Jack White who used his handicap to score 72. IN THE senior division George Rackham used his knowledge of the course, he works at the Bountiful City facility, to carve out the 76. Kent Winegar, showing no signs of losing his game, despite having just returned a mission, tied from Rackham for the first place honors, but then lost to George in a sudden death playoff. SECOND place was also a tie with Gordon Milne and Harvey Hascall each scoring 79, the fifth place award went to Dick Fonnesbeck with an 80. Winning low net honors was Bob VanWagenen with a 67, second was a three way tie at 68 between Merril Layton, Don Baxter and Louie Hep- - AEROBATIC PLANE one-seat- er AND THATS exactly what doing, right in his own backyard at 258 W. 1300 North in Bountiful. The release is scheduled for the latter part of July. THE release of the brood stock is part of the overall fish culture program of the Divisions Fisheries Management Section. Utah has produced its own fertilized eggs for rearing in the states hatcheries for approximately four years. Kent Miller, supervisor of the fish culture program, explained the release, We have found that most rainbow trout reach a reproductive peak at the ages of three to five years for the females and two to four years of age in the males. This is the time of the fishes' life cycle where the highest quality and quantity reproduction occurs BY rotating the brood stock to maintain maximum numbers of fish in their peak reproductive condition, we feel that the hatchery system can be operated at the most efficient levels. Planting the large fish represents special challenges for fish managers. SSS8IBI SINCE many waters become too warm in late summer, biologists also had to be certain that areas in which the fish were released were deep enough to provide suitable water temperature. The water also had to protect the fish from winterkill, as someof the brood stock are expected to hold over until next year. Some waters in the state were rejected because they did not meet these specifications. PLANS for this Honors At MARY Ellen is a member of the TAGS Gymnastic School, np Stock Released ed to budd.
