Show i WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, By KEITH DUNCAN - SMITHFIELD Call it what you may, but Clearfields 1981-8- fell short of its goal to capture the 1982 Region One Championship. SKY VIEW High, with six region champions and five others that placed among the top four, won the championship quite easily with 1622 points. Weber took second while Clearfield tied with their arch rivals from Layton with 125'2 points. Layton too was disappointed, its showing in the g meet couldnt have been any better. With as many men as we had in the finals, I just expected to win a few of them," said Mike Hansen of Layton, Its not easy losing all of them. to Colby. Colby won the match because he had more reverses in the overtime period. POWERFUL ROBBIE Mike Cabrey lost a dual to Burke Stone of Weber in the 141 lbs. class and had to settle for second place. Zamora improved his overall record to 23-- 2 this year by bringing down Ricky Owen of Sky View, 13-- 1 in the 115 lbs. class. Zamora had virtually no trouble at all in beating the Bobcat wrestler and, in fact, made it look easy. Steve Seamons of Sky View and Mike Petroff of Layton staged a classic dual in the 122 lbs. division. Their match extended into the three overtime periods after the match had been knotted at six apiece in regulation. one-minu- day-lon- FOR SCOTT Tennis of Clearfield, the tie for third place was disappointing considering the fact there was a great chance and talk of winning the region title. This is Tennis fifth year at the school and every year his team has made great improvement. He was hoping that 1982 would produce a champion. You can bet though, the Falcons will be back, as will the Lancers. CLEARFIELDS Doug Kopecky and Steve Ulibarri were the showcases for the Falcons. For Layton, they could muster only one region champion in Robbie Zamora after having three others in the finals. Steve Ulibarri possibly does not receive all the attention he should. The defending state champion, at 98 lbs., has glided through the season with an undefeated record. His unorthodox style earned a region crown last Thursday which was his second in a row. He destroyed Roys Darren Day in the finals, 12-Ulibarri couldnt pin Day but none the less got the victory and now advances into the state tournament as the number one seed in the ranks. 4-- SHAD RAGAN nearly pulled the upset of the day in the 108 lbs. bracket. He wrestled Shawn Olsen of Sky View in the final match of that bracket at)d was leading 3 in the final period before falling in the last minute and losing 10-Ragan is a sophomore and jthough it hurt him deeply not to win the region title, he cer 11, 1982 tainly has nothing to hang his head about. He appears to be a strong challenger in future sea sons. wrestling squad 2 couldnt quite put it together last week and consequently NORTH DAVIS LEADER, FEBRUARY THIS MATCH may have been somewhat in question because with 48 seconds left in the third round, it appeared without question that Petroff had his opponent pinned. Seamons was behind at that point but got an escape with only seconds to go to get the tie and go into overtime. The Sky View wrestler won in the overtime period by a score of 1 and thus took the championship. 6-- AT 129 LBS. Denny Shupe of Sky View won a heartbreaking victory over Eric Figgins of Layton. It was heartbreaking for Figgins because he lost it on a penalty point with only two seconds remaining. The lone point gave Shupe a 2 lead and virtually no time for Figgins to come back to win. It was tough losses like that that gave Hansen his headaches. At 135 lbs., another overtime match took place, only this time it was decided on a referees decision. Lance Parker, Clearfields best at that weight, lost the decision to Gary Colby of Sky View. DOUG KOPECKY claimed the tournaments outstanding wrestler trophy for his dominance in the 148 lbs. class. He defeated Dave Shupe of Weber in the finals. Kopeky is still undefeated this season and he too enters the state tournament as the Number one seed. Other top finishers for Layton included Donny Zamora at 101 lbs.; Rodney Rientjes 108 lbs.; Tracy Jones 148 lbs.; Marc Wilson 170 lbs.; Mark Ellis 188 lbs., and at heavyweight, Robert Gray. ALL TOGETHER the Lancers will send nine wrestlers to the state tournament this week while Clearfield will also send nine. Clearfields other top Doug Kopecky, undefeated in two years of wrestling was the Outstanding Wrestler during the Region One Wrestling Championships. He is the favorite again to win a 148 this w'eek in the state wrestling finals at the U. of U. 4-- finishers include Mike Funk at 158 lbs. who placed second; Karl Wilson who also took second at 188 lbs.; Rick Herdt who took fourth at 115 lbs.; Rene Espolon at 122 lbs. who placed fourth and John Sorenson of Clearfield who got third place in the 170 lbs. class. Robbie Zamora had little trouble with his Sky View opponent and was claimed a region champion. Local Region One Placers THE PROBLEM at this weight was that Colby just plain wouldnt wrestle Parker. He rode the Falcon grappler through most of their match Champions and eventually had two warning points assessed against him which knotted the score of 2 after three periods of wrestling. In the overtime, Colby continued his stalling tactics and was again warned for stalling with just two seconds left in the overtime which knotted in overtime. the score at 101 -- Steve Ulibarri 115-Robb- ie 148-Dou- g - Clearfield Zamora Kopecky - Layton Clearfield 4 THERE WAS quite a wait as the referees decision was being decided from the rule book.
