SEPTEMBER 20. 1979 Davis To Host Bear River In First Regional Play By DAVE WIGHAM Clearfield Set To Plan By (.alters DAVE WIGHAM CLEARFIELD - The Clearfield football club now has three practice games under their belts and they are ready to open up league play this week on the road at Bonneville. THERE WAS some talk around the area that the Falcons were down a little this year in the football department but these players have turned a few heads with a 1 record in preseason. First the Falcons downed Viewmont, then they dropped a 0 decision to the highly regarded Bountiful crew. It could have been closer had it not been for a couple of dropped passes. Last Friday 14-- they then knocked off previously unbeaten Davis on the Dart field. ANY COACH will tell you that its great heading into the first league game on the heels of a big win, which Clearfield came up with a week ago. In facing Bonneville the Falcons face the club that everyone picked in the preseason to win the league. After all the Lakers were second a year ago in the tough Region One and many of their top players were juniors and even a couple of sophomores. THEN THE Lakers m i t t despite still being just a junior. The Bears are of unknown quality to the Davis team. They havent played a strong preseason schedule and they bring with them a new coach. Mark Pearce, who recently -- people drooling. IF THE Lakers do opt to go in the air then theyll be going against one of the best secondaries in the area. In the three games thus far they have picked off six passes. In the win over Davis three different people picked off a played college ball for the University of Utah, came to the Bears after one year as a graduate assistant position with the Weber State crew. Bonneville can also go on the ground especially with the likes of Marvin Ellis back. Marvin has been a three year starter for the Lakers and is considered one of the fastest backs in the state. Containing him will definitely be a top priority recoveries fumble come away with the win. The Darts have looked good in preseason with wins over Murray and Viewmont, then their first loss of the year to Clearfield. The offense played well in the first two outings but for some reason last week the backs had trouble holding onto the ball and their passer had trouble connecting with his receivers. into scores. Eric Naylor, Glen Simpson and Dean Vernon will be chasing down Ellis and Company while they still have the speed in Gooch behind them to catch up to the Laker speedster. Ever since Brent Hancock took over the program they have gained the reputation of a club that simply likes to get after people, and this years club is a prime example. They have a swarming type defense and an offense that can run or throw. SHOULD BE a good contest as region action opens. There are some top clubs in the league and everyone wants to start out with a win. quarterback Cory Sylvester might have pneumonia and could possibly miss the entire season. Fortunately Cory is well enough to play now and made his season debut last week in their win over Hillcrest. Cory is considered one of the top throwers in the state . WHEN THE dust had settled last week, the offense had given the ball up five times, and Clearfield is too good a team to give the ball to that many times. For awhile last week it looked as if the Darts would pull out a win when they began to drive for the goal line "with five minutes to play but they fumbled the ball away at the two minute mark and Clearfield ran out the clock.
