Show WEEKLY REFLEX-DAV- IS NEWS JOURNAL. SEPTEMBER 22. 1977 Soma Thoughts About Games Pre-Seas- on By DAVE WIGHAM After last weeks opening region action, three thoughts n come to mind. First, does scores mean anything? Second, can a club lose a ballgame in their opener and win the title and third was one old region better than another? pre-seaso- TAKING THE thoughts one at a time. The games the clubs played. Take the Davis and Viewmont cases, both went into the games without a win and both won their openers. Look at their opponents, Davis played Layton and then Bountiful, neither considered a patsie. Viewmont played East and Skyline, again no weak pre-seas- sisters there. games are up to the coaches at the schools. If a coach wants to pad his record and schedule easy schools, he can do it. On the other hand if he wants to schedule the tough schools, thats also his privilege. Pre-seaso- n THERE HAVE been teams go into region without a loss and drop their openers, then again there have been those who havent won a game and yet win the opener. Whos to say which is better? The next problem can clubs like Clearfield, Bonneville and the others who lost their openers still win the league. After seeing the talent in the region, its highly likely the winner will drop at least one and probably two games in this league. ROY, and Layton were picked as top clubs. Clearfield is no pushover as Layton found out, Bonneville is as good a club as Bountiful has played, and Viewmont showed they shouldnt be taken lightly. Although its not the best way to start out a region race, those who lost are by no means out of the race. BOUNTIFUL, THIRDLY, AFTER the Viewmont victory several people were saying that the win proved the old Region Two was better than Region One. Consider then that Bountiful had such a rough time with the Bonneville club, from the old region. THE MAIN difference between the Region One teams yesterday compared to the old Region Two clubs was one of balance. In Region One there was always one or maybe two top clubs, whenever those two met, the region title was on the line, during the rest of the season they had easy games. While Region Two was well balanced, always several clubs fighting for top honors. This year there is no breather from any school. After one week the only thing settled is that anything can happen to any of the teams in the region. of This Friday the Woods Cross football team will travel to South High in Salt Lake City for a game in which both clubs will be looking for their first win in Region Four. THE WILDCATS had better success in' their first game than did the Cubs. They almost pulled off a come from behind win over Bear River. After spotting the Bears a field goal and a touchdown, the Wildcats scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter with just over five minutes to play when quarterback Jeff Ostler hit end Gregg Tuttle with a scoring strike. All the Cats wanted to do was get their hands on the ball again and score but the Bear River group never did give it up again as they ran out the clock. Meanwhile the South club never did get on the score board as they were shut out by the Ben Lomond squad up in Ogden. Dont be fooled by that fact though, the Cubs have plenty of talent on the club and have the potential of Odd Taoiggle W IGHAM pre-seaso- Even the players at Viewmont High were beginning to wonder what they had to do to win a football game. After all the Vikes had not only lost both games, but they hadn't been able to get on the scoreboard. Well last Steve Meendrick (223) and Dale Petersen (190); against the Braves Ron Hammer (190), Scot Kinnear (190), Dean Layton (230), Tony Smith (190) and Steve Rudd pre-seas- putting a lot of points on the board. BOTH CLUBS are new to varsity ranks, this is Woods Cross debut iri varsity athletics and the Cubs have always competed against the bigger schools in the 4A ranks. Both clubs are listed as young and inexperienced so they both just might loosen up and play some exciting ball. South coach, Bud Murray, who came over after being an assistant at West under Gene Plaga fo. a number of years, cites his running backs as one of his teams strong points. Indeed the Cubs have some talent in the likes of Mike Nick Valles and Doug Perry, all three of these runners are from the hard-nosemold who like to run up the middle. the 3A Layton Elem. Plans Back To THE quarterbacking situa- tion definitely goes to the Braves. Senior Chris Davies is a better player all around than the Roy signal caller Jon Nickerson. Davies throws the ball better than his Royal counterpart. School Night Back to School The running games could be a standoff, then Bountiful will get the nod on the strength of Davies throwing arm. Plus the fact that this is Bountiful's Homecoming, in high school sports the mental game is a big factor. night for Layton Elementary School will be held Thursday, Sept. 29 beginning at 7 p.m. There will be a general meeting in e room and the then parents will visit inmulti-purpos- dividual classrooms. Refreshments will be served following the meeting. Quarterback Ryan Hill, fullback Keith Malnar and halfbacks Mitch Keck and Gregory are the latest in a long line of great backfields for the Darts. Each has had their bright spots in the early going sc far this year and last Friday all of them put together good nights to spell trouble and defeat for their opponents. DEFENSIVELY the Darts bent last week in the early going. The Tigers just ran over people, but then after some adjustments by Coach Kent Draayer, the Darts settled down and played tough in limiting the potent Ogden attack to only two touchdowns. Leading the Dart defense are linebackers Brad Hatch, Scott Fletcher and Malnar. Box Elder has some talent on their side of the line as win evidenced by their over Logan last week. The 24-2- 1 r; Bees won the game with a field goal by Dale Money with 15 seconds to play. The kick was a Box Elder had seen a 21-- 7 third quarter lead diminish at the hands of the Logan club before the heroic boot by Money. BOX ELDER had built up a score at halftime with Kevin Farnsworth scoring on a run and a pass play from Kline Adams to end Marlin Jensen. Their other touchdown came in the third period when Kline found Brent Gray all alone in the end zone from the 14-- 0 terback, Jack Gehrke, is a good leader with a strong throwing arm. One problem the South crew has had is giving their signal caller time to set up and throw the ball, the line has to give him more time. Woods Cross, although young, has a lot of talent on their team in quarterback Jeff Ostler. This young man will probably become the first athlete at the new school, although there are a few others that will give him a race for the honor. This little lefty can do it all, run, throw, kick and run back kicks, if he had his way he would do anything and everything on the gridiron. region. offset that with some team speed. True, the Vikes arent the biggest high school club around but on defense they like to gang tackle and on offense they like to strike THE Vikes and their coaches have some needed confidence going into this weeks encounter with Lay-toBeating Weber is one thing, but beating Layton is another. The Warrior win was a good one as quarterback Kevin Hess proved he could move the club and put points on the board. Running back Tod Jones takes a back seat to no one in the area as far as desire goes, he is one of the main stays on the Vike offense. But the Lancers have a back of their own that isnt too bad himself in Maurice Turner. NOW quickly. LAYTON ON the other hand is very methodical, they like to run most ot the time and their execution has been improving each game to the point of being very effective. Against Clearfield it was the ground game of Layton that was the difference. Turner is the type of runner who could be in a scoring position anytime he touches the ball. breakaway He possesses speed from anywhere on the field. The Vikes will definitely have to contain this speedy senior. Running isnt the only thing the Lancers do with the ball. Quarterback Ben Bubak is a good passer and the Layton squad have some top receivers in Rick Snow, Fred Lacey and Charles Waaler. VIEWMONT had some success in shutting down the Weber ground attack but they'll have their hands full trying to contend the speedy Turner. If the Vikes try to key too much on Turner then junior Todd Stapley is ready to take up the slack. Moving the ball will be another problem for the Vikings this week, in their opener against Clearfield last week the Lancer D refused to let the Falcons get in the end zone. Viewmont on the other hand gave up a couple of touchdowns in their opener. VIEWMONT will need to play ball control to keep the ball away from the Lancer offense. If the Vikes can move the ball and keep the defense from playing most of the time, then theyll be in the game. ' LAYTON WAS a pick to win the league and n after a shaky start against Davis, they have been improving each week, and To add incentive to the Layton group, this is their Homecoming week and game. Viewmont on the other hand wants to prove their win last week was no fluke. line. The home field advantage gives the Bees a little edge but not nearly enough to offset the Davis offense. Gregg Tuttle has the speed and hands to be a top receiver when the Cats pull the ball up, as are Waite and World. Their line improves with each game. Defensively the Cats have shown they can hold anyone out of their end zone, they haven't given up that many points to anyone that theyve played. BOTH CLUBS are anxious to get back on the winning path and to get back in the race for the region crown. Itll be interesting to see the outcome as these two meet head to head knowing very little about each other.
