The trait 1 admired most in them was their obedience in waiting in line. QUEING up, they called it. That doesnt look right. Queing up? Cueing up? Well, however they spelled it, they did it with great regularity. They stood in line to obtain food ration stamps and then to buy the food They stood in line to get on the bus then stood while riding. They stood in line to find places to live when their previous home suddenly became a pile r H 5, H L -- of rubble. ARTICLES were written and newsreel cameras s recorded long lines of Bri-tain- waiting patiently. One (UJ2 current joke was about two friends who met on a street corner, stopped to chat and soon had a line half a block long behind them. Whatever they were waiting for, everyone else wanted some home. BESIDES which when I stand m line I feel used and put upon. Whatever it is should be instantly available. If there isnt enough to go round, why dont they get more? It also has a taint of inefficiency. Either someone over sold the tickets in which case there will be a mad rush when the doors open and I am not constitutionally fitted for the mad rush. Or their sale items have been over advertised or over produced in which case if I get in to buy one, every third lady in church will be wearing one and I wont want too. To me the ability to stand in line patiently must be an inbred talent. It must have to do with an mate sense of orderliness and duty, which probably means I am a secret rebel and not to be trusted, because I fudge in lines. IT isnt always a matter ot being in such a tearing hurry, though there is usually little enough time. I just plain dont like lines. Someone once told me Americans come with a little pocket of intact air space in which we move untouched. We dont like being jostled, and let me tell you he was talking about me. Let one shoulder rub or one elbow jab and I decide I didnt want whatever is available at the end of the line and I head for it anyhow. LINES materialize in front of me. tippy toe into the supermarket at unlikely Then as I approach the checkout stand where the checker is lounging polishing her nails, suddenly a traffic jam occurs in front of me and I find myself fourth in line behind two overloaded carts, a teenager who is clutching a check, two packages of cigarettes and a six pack of beer and one querrulous elderly lady. I know very well where I acquired my extreme distaste for standing in line. It came about when I first came to Salt Lake City, about the beginning of world war II. MY SISTER and nickels to see I hoarded Sergeant York which was coming to the local theaters. We finally got as far as the front door of the theatre-- it was the old Capitol, and we stood m line for two hours and forty-fiv- e mjputes all the way up the stairs to the balcony, and just about the time we got to where we could see the movie and maybe even get a seat, they announced the last showing was just finishing Last Wednesday night at Hollow the subject of water, its accumulation, dis tribution and control was dis cussed. Hods J.C. (Cliff) Linford, a former mayor of Kaysville, and serving as a director in the Weber Basin Conservancy District, which was constructed by the United States Bureau of Reclamation, and a longtime advocate for better distribution and regulation of water and water rights led the discussion. It provided many questions for the members and all realized the gravity of the situation if we dont have sufficient snow and moisture next winter. So, it behooves every individual to be alert to conservation of that priceless product, water, np and would we please come back tomorrow night? It took two days for my feet to get back to normal size after being stood on by me and an assortment of fellow sufferers all for the pleasure of standing in line, and I vowed then and there to avoid lines.
