Prior to that he worked for the Utah Highway Department before going to Alaska, mnm Commissioner Tells Of Antelope Island History Davis County Commissioner, Glen Flint, spoke to the Kiwanis Club at their March 11, 1977 breakfast meeting at the Valley View Restaurant. He recounted the history of development of Antelope Island. He and Wayne Wmegar, as County Commissioners originally proposed the project. about 87,000 population by people at that time. In order to accommodate increased population a new West Valley freeway will have to be built. It will pass through Syracuse, West Layton, and west of D&RG right of way south to the airport road in North Salt Lake. HE ALSO indicated that it has taken 14 years to get hospitals built for Davis County 1 $5 million bond issue was ON JANUARY 15, 1964 the county began digging mud with a dragline for building Antelope Island causeway. The dragline worked 24 hours a day, 6 days per week through April 28, 1964, dredging from island to mainland. By mid August the mud was i -- approved for hospitals in south and north ends of Davis County, but Federal matching funds were dropped. Then the county could not build. Two private companies, Extenda Care and Hospital Corporation of America became interested in building hospitals here. After studying their facilities elsewhere, the commission arranged to have Extenda Care, now named Humana, build the hospital in North Davis County and Hospital Corp. of America built the hospital in South Davis dry. The county then borrowed a bulldozer for 120 days from Hillfield and labor to run it was furnished partly free and partly at reduced price by red tired and persons. semi-retire- THE motivation for the project was in part to promote tourism in Utah. Major economic benefits of the project would enure to Weber and Salt Lake Counties. Mr. Flint noted that the Davis County population has doubled since 1963. It is projected that the Davis County population will triple again by year 2000 and will surpass Weber County County. THE LAND previously purchased for hospital sites was sold to these companies. $3 12 million of the bonds previously sold for hospital construction has been repaid. The remaining balance of the bond issue is being paid off as rapidly as possible. Earn Recent reassessment of property in the county has raised valuation from $120 million to $333 million. Mill levy in Davis county was 13 mills prior to revaluation. After valuation mill levy went down to 8.8 mills, has remained at that level until 1976. Levy is kept down by not providing municipal services LAND FILLS are paid for by assessing each family 50 cents a month and commercial haulers $1 a ton. No tax dollars are spent on these facilities. The county now has 230 employees, 44 of which are in the sheriffs department. ONE EMPLOYEE works full time in promoting clean industry for the county. Objective is to make jobs to keep our young people in the county and reverse the migration of our children to other areas in search of jobs.
